I,ve thought about rounding up an original kit bag or V2 version a few times, with the idea of carrying a commander size 1911 and a pair of 10x42 binocs..
Seems like it should work in theory, wondering if anybody,s doing that? Pros, cons, good idea or bad? Have concerns about something on the chest getting too damn hot to stand when tramping through the woods..

Just listed an original kit bag in Ranger Green for sale to save you some cash ;^)

Works perfectly with my Glock 21 or 30 and spare mag in the pistol pouch. Vortex Viper HD 10x42, Garmin 650T, and Nikon Riflehunter 550 range finder in the middle pocket. Lens pen, petzl e-lite, flint & steel, 4- wet fire tabs, and windicator bottle in the front pocket.

Been running that way for several trips and haven't found it bad yet. Tried to get my partner set up the same way but he won't give up the pistol on his belt. (Thus his kit bag is for sale here).

We didn't see enough of an "improvement" in the version 2 to justify the cost. It's heavier, has Molle on the very bottom edge (where I'd never mount anything), and the middle pocket has full Velcro with slots cut for Molle gear attachment (unless you've got Velcro backed accessories you're probably not gonna add pouches to the inside of the pocket), and larger heavier #10 zippers (kinda overkill for this bag type application).

I've had several kit bags and currently run the V2 original or whatever they're calling it. I think 10x42's and the 1911 will be pretty tight in there though. The front pocket will probably only have space for real thin gear at that point.

Not my exact carry load but what I had handy for size and pic reference

I run the Original Kit Bag with my Nikon 10x42s, Sig 229 w/ spare mag, Nikon range finder, Garmin 650T gps, wind checker and a bunch of other small items. Works perfect and everything fits well. In regards to your "chest getting to hot" I haven't had a problem. I sweat fairly easy and don't notice any difference between the kit and a bino harness. The biggest difference for me is on my upper back where I notice the extra sweat do to the strap/mesh area keeping my UA shirts pressed against me all day. Hope this helps.
