While hiking in the Rockies/foothills (Alberta) this weekend I stumbled on a bear bed. I spotted this dug out area and, on investigation, realized what it was. A number of partial prints were visible, but nothing definitive. The attached picture shows my size 13 foot beside one of the more well defined tracks. Good sized track, but with lack of large claw marks I am guessing it is a Black Bear? Fairly confident in identifying between a Black and a Grizz in snow, mud, etc., and we have both species in the area, but this soft earth made it more challenging. Any opinions?

The bear had dug into cool dirt, near the bottom of a drainage. Looked like a very comfy spot. The moisture in the dirt and the tracks makes me think I may have bumped him from his bed.
