Wrapped up a week long spree on Kodiak. Finally getting caught up before we are wheels up for Thanksgiving. No major injuries, no major wildlife issues. Weather played nice and plenty of deer to chase. Logged over 15 miles via GPS and climbed around 8500 feet. Wouldn't think I'd gain so much but we wanted to hunt away from camp to keep the gut piles at a distance.

Enjoy!

Beer Creek. Day 4 we started finding empty cans in the tall grass several yards away, punctured by fox teeth. Thankfully no evidence of bear cubs.

Not gonna lie, I've always slept like a rock in the woods but this trip was gravely different. Our first night at 0130am, something crashed our bear fence hard. In its fury it became tangled in the wire and kicked the back of the tent just above our heads. I do believe it was a deer, thankfully. I will have to stock up on a few extra bear fence parts, a fox had taken off with the plastic insulators and chewed it up but it was still serviceable when found.

We were able to hunt daily, average 11am to dark at which point the winds kicked up. A few nights it whipped up pretty good but I issues with the Arctic Oven. Our only drawback was underestimating propane, the longer nights had us in the tent more, sleeping 9-12hours a day and enjoying the heat a bit too much. We packed an 11# tank which ran out the morning before we had left, on one of the 2 coldest nights.

We averaged 1000-1300ft elevation daily chasing bucks, minus the last 2 days which were a dead calm and allowed us to hunt as the sun was coming up but also providing he 2 coldest and clearest days, bucks were glassed at lake elevation chasing does.

This was my first kill and hands on experience with a cryptorchid blacktail deer. It's quarters and backstraps were significantly larger than the other 5 deer we had killed, even after trimming away over an inch of fat. Not mating, he isn't starving himself in the rut chasing does.

Awesome! Yeah it's nice to rewind the weather clock to no snow and ~15-20* warmer temps for a week, even in November!
