I really pray the winter is mild. After that buck, I am really looking forward to coming back early next year and going after them with my longbow. He is all I could ever hope for and everything from here out is just more icing on the cake.

dd-have to make it home first.

Speaking of food, we ate great in camp. It was a JetBoil culinary extravaganza...scrambled eggs with sautéed mushrooms, onions, peppers and bacon every morning, and home dehydrated meals brought back to life every night. We even supplemented with Sitka Blacktail Tenderloin Shabu Shabu a couple nights from each buck.

After finally making it home yesterday I realized I love everything about hunting Kodiak except for the commercial flights. Getting everything coordinated hauling home meat, capes, and antlers between two different airlines is a nightmare. Add in the weather delays and cancellations, and then the long flights themselves and it really takes the cherry off the sundae. But I’m already looking forward to going back.

Looks like a great hunt. I'm looking into doing a similar hunt in late-August/early September 2019. Is a budget of $6,500 and three weeks of time enough to get me there and back (hopefully with meat) from Pennsylvania?

I would think $6500 would be plenty, probably even with enough left over for some taxi work if you wanted to do that. My wife's uncle comes up from PA every couple years and does a hunt with me (a couple of which have been on Kodiak), and I know that he has never spent nearly that much. I believe starting this summer Alaska Air is going to be operating flights between Anchorage and Pittsburgh, so just one more option for commercial airlines.

Absolutely! As AKTB said very doable; you could add some salmon and halibut charters with all that budget. . I’m WAY under that.

Commercial round trip is $600-1000 depending on how you do it. My cost has gone up since Delta is not a partner with AK Air any more, I used to fly directly to Kodiak for miles. Now it is $2-300 from Anchorage.

Charter is $500-1500 depending on where you want to go and in what plane.

Then you just have tags and incidentals. And extra baggage fees coming home.

I think if I had a $6500 budget I’d get dropped off where the caribou are and make it a big ol’ combo hunt.

Steve O, is that the south end of the island, looks nice, rolling hills and not much elevation. I have a bear tag for the Aliulilk Pen this fall there and am trying to envision what it will look like since I've never been that far south.

Yes Nick—way south. I will PM you and help you if I can, I tried looking up that Pen quickly but did not find exact location. You could see there had been a LOT of bears in there earlier in the fall and it would have been an excellent bow spot.

Went back solo this year. Still love KI and hunting deer there. Found this great buck early and looked over many, many, many more looking for a better one to bring home with him and did not. May take me a long time to find one better. I look forward to that.

Kodiak is a fantastic adventure. I’m hoping for one more mild winter and head back in August with my bow.
