I couldn't pass up the "savings" of getting the Alaska tags before the costs went up. Managed to talk some buddies into this adventure again so we'll be heading up the last week and a half to two weeks in August. At this point it's a DIY hunt and we'll probably mix in a little floating of the Sag and some other streams. May have to give Mr. Bartlett a call about some more rafts too :D

Anyone else going to be up there around this time? We'll probably be near Happy Valley for a little bit and it might be nice to know if someone is there that could maybe give one of us a ride back to a vehicle if we all do a float. It would also be fun just to meat up (pun intended) and see how folks did and just say hi.

Always nice to get a letter like this in the mail:

Thanks. Right now my biggest concern is the herd size and possibility of an EO closing down the season. We'll just have to wait and see on that though

Ill be up there, best of luck!

Heh, I saw your post on Bowsite or somewhere. I am also looking forward to getting back into those elusive caribou. You'll have to let me know once you have your plans set and I always love scouting reports if you are there before us :D

Most likely be up there every weekend in July and early August until Sheep opens. Reports, I've found, mean very little as it's constantly changing and mostly a crap shoot. Either way, I enjoy it quite a bit and it's something to do.

I will be up there middle to late August on a fly out float hunt slightly east of the location you're looking at. Lets hope they don't close it on EO as I already have a deposit on a flight. I am flying out of coldfoot so will not have the truck as far north as happy valley.

here ya go fellas. I'm ashamed of our state's dram, but you should stay informed.

I'll be in Barrow testifying at these meetings on behalf of Alaska BHA, and I'll give them hell.

Larry, thank you for fighting the good fight. The trouble with changing the rules 4 months before the season is most of us have had non refundable deposits in on our hunts for almost a year already.

Limits for non residents are already reduced by the BOG.

As a guy that was born and raised in Alaska, now living out of state, it will hurt my heart to take our hunt dollars to Canada.

We have a group of six with twice the tags we are allowed to fill (thanks to the ADF&G encouraging us to buy tags before the price increases). We have airfare, rental vehicles, hotels, raft rentals, and bush transporter all lined up with deposits in. If they change the rules again this late in the game, that's a huge hit and cancels our hints for the year.

We didn't apply for tags locally with the expectation of hunting up North.

I think I need a drink

From what I've read on Alaska dispatch HB 211 would take effect Jan 1 2018 if it did pass. Looks like this is different proposal though.
Also raises questions that the people introducing this bill are saying it's about caribou numbers and herd health. Yet only non-residents are being denied in HB 211? Even though biologist data shows resident harvest accounted for 94% of hunter harvest. I like this kicker too.. NR TAGS may still be available with a qualified guide. For caribou...

I was reading this about HB 211 so I think I was confusing the two different proposals. Non of which sound very good.

Thanks for the info and representing Larry. I wonder if phoning in simply allows one to listen or if all can participate in public comment.

I didn't think it was denying just non-residents. My understanding is it will deny resident non-local (native) hunters as well. Basically saying that only local subsistence hunters are allowed.

And yes, to me the worst part about this is how late in the game this may take affect. It's not just non-residents that have deposits tied up with guides or transporters and we could all be up the proverbial tributary without the proper means of motivation.

I was confusing this with HB 211. So yes this year would be a bummer. Still seems based on illegitimacy.

Seemed to be plenty of caribou. My buddy and I killed two the first day of our 3 we had planned. Bugs were not bad and the sun was shining, it was great.
