DIY Ultra Lightweight Game Bags, meat sacks.
Here's another project I completed along side the Gore-Tex Cowboy Bedroll Cover. I'd been looking at the Tag Bags, Caribou bags and Gote Bags for some while. Was even considering that Game Bag Kit by Ajillis Products on Ebay. Wanted some ultra light bags I could carry w/ me all the time simply to use to keep bugs & bees off my meat while I went for the mules, which could be a day or two. It's my intention to then drop the meat into heavier duty canvas qtr bags once the mules are on site. But.... I could never find anyone local that sold them so I could compare before buying. I knew what I wanted, but couldn't put answers to which to buy. Anyway I was in the Mill End Store looking at material for another project when I ran across a couple chunks of some ultra lightweight VERY SHEER ripstop nylon fabric. This stuff was so sheer that if you hold it up to the light, you can see right thru it! Air even moves through it w/ ease. It seemed perfect for making a set of meat sacks so I bought both chunks... hell of a deal, ~$10 for both. Just enough to make a set of meat sacks. One piece was big enough to make TWO 32" x 54" Large Qtr Bags (< 2oz each), and the other scrap was big enough to make ONE large whole deer bag (~3oz). Kinda debating on cutting that one in half to make two smaller deer sized qtr bags. When I say Qtr Bags, I mean large enough for half an animal. The main goal was to make some ultra light bags that I could carry in my pack with me ALL the time. They'd become a normal part of my gear. And at ~5oz combined, I think I can handle that.
Here's the finished product: Note: the "Whole Deer" bag on the left is still wrong side out so you can see how I sewed it. One the right are the two Large Elk Qtr bags stacked on one another w/ .338Ultra shell for perspective. Surged edge w/ heavy duty stitch for strength. With 550 cord for drawstring.
As you can see the "small" Elk Qtr Bags are large enough to darned near big enough to sleep in. he, he.
