So, I have a primo tag for elk this fall. It's a rifle tag, and the max range will be 400 yds, likely 300. Ive got a 6.5 creedmoor and a 270wsm. Both will be shooting lead free. Both shoot well. Is it a toss up? This is likely a lifetime tag for me. Just looking for confirmation!

Some Elk are tough SOBs if you miss the boiler room. I would use the 270WSM w/ highest grain bullet you can shoot accurately to 300 yrds. Otherwise, I would consider getting a 300WM or equivalent. With a primo tag, I would limit my question marks.....

270 short mag for sure.

Not sure if you roll your own or not but I shoot Barnes 110 grain TTSX's outta my 270 win and they scream. Super flat out to 400. Lead free. Something like 80% weight retention even if you go through bone.

However I'd never stand in the way of a guy getting a new rifle...

I agree with no question marks. I plan to hunt Idaho for deer and elk with a 260 light weight rifle ,but its a meat hunt for elk and trophy hunt for back country Mule deer with 130 grain Scirocco's. But I would be carrying my 300 WM if it was a Great tag for elk.

My last bull was killed with 300WM and Barnes 180 gr TTSX.......worked perfectly. Recovered the bullet in exit hide with great expansion and >80% retention.

270 WSM without hesitation. The lead free bullets lack sectional density and need the speed to compensate for loss of retained energy and harder expansion. 6.5 Creedmore is on the weak side for elk to start and the lead free bullets reduce its effectiveness.

Awesome stuff guys! I think I'll use the 270wsm and then buy a rifle on the side since I have an excuse:)

Just to pile on...270 WSM. Hunt of a lifetime=as much insurance as possible. It's not like a 270 WSM is even overpowered or anything...

270 wsm will kill it as dead as anything at 400 yards or less. And, nothing made is more insurance if you hit it wrong. I like the idea of a new rifle though. :D Good luck and God Bless
