Berger 215 Hybrid or 210 VLD freedom pills for 300 Win Mag

I just ordered some 215's and need to pick up some 210's to work up some loads for my 300 win mag for the upcoming season. Are any of you guys launching these out of your rifles? The 215's are listed as a "target" bullet, but they're a hollow point and there are a bunch of guys in the West running them for hunting rounds.

Just curious to hear what loads you're liking in them. I know it will be different for my rifle, just trying to get an idea. I will most likely be going with h1000 powder, as it seems most guys are getting the best loads out of it. Plus there isn't any noticeable change with accuracy due to temp with this powder. From what I have read at least.

I will be shooting these out of my Savage 111.

I wouldn't bother with 210s unless for some reason 215s don't shoot well.

Why not the ELD X??

been running the 200s in our 300wsm and terminal performance is way better than what I have seen from Berger.
212gn ELD X have a BC thats well up there aswell

I would start with 215s seated at the lands(or magazine length) with 73.0 grains of H1000 working up in .5 grain increments with the OCW or .3 grains with a ladder looking for pressure which I would expect to find somewhere around 77 grains. When I found the best node I would use it for seating depth testing in .010 increments. In different rifles I have seen the 215s like at the lands, .010 off, .030 off and .040 off(two 300 Win mags and 2 30 Noslers). The powder charges in my two 300s where 76.3 and 75.0. This was with two different lots of powder and velocity was 2890 in my 27" and 2950 in my 28".

I have not heard of one bad experience with the 215s terminal performance with proof that is was in fact the bullet. Ask Broz how he feels about it. He has more kills with the 215 than I probably will in a lifetime. As stated above I would not mess with the 210 unless the 215 will not work(I can't see that happening). The Hornady bullets' bearing surface is too long. Most likely they will not obtain the same velocity before hitting pressure and in most rifles will be seated too deeply when touching the lands. The Savage has a short mag box so I am not sure how the 212 will be compared to the 215.

I was checking out the calculator on Berger's website, and it was say that the 215's prefer a 1:9 twist rate. Any of you guys had any issues using a 1:10 twist rate?

When I used 300 WM velocities and anything above 2k' elevation Bergers calculator showed full stability with a 10 twist. 10 twist will work fine.

1-10 twist is good for the 215s IME. I had a custom 300 built specifically with the 215s in mind and it was built with a 28" 1:10 Broughton barrel. It's extremely accurate and with the shorter bearing surface of the 215s, I can push them to 3k fps fairly easily. H1000, Norma brass and CCI mag primers has been excellent. I recently found some Federal match primers to try but I doubt I can improve upon my load now - hopefully a little lower ES. I zero checked it not long ago and the first 3 shot so tightly that I shot the other 4 rounds I had with me just to see. All 7 printed a ragged hole under a half inch. I wish I had taken 10 with me.

Agreed if for no other reason you don't have to drill out the tips.
