Picked up my 20ga Montefeltro yesterday and was pretty excited about the wood grain on it. It was probably the nicest wood I’d seen on a shotgun in person. I can’t wait to shoot roosters with it and pass it down to my kiddos.

Let’s see some of the cool wood stocks you all have on some of the guns you’ve acquired.

Sweet looking Benelli. I'm sure that really has great depth to the wood in the sunlight.

I'll bite with a couple that I have made. First is a .458 Lott that I built on an P14 Enfield action, Oregon Myrtle Stock (has been checkered since the photo was taken). Second is a Claro Walnut stock that I did on a Weatherby Vanguard action that I rebarrled in 7mm Rem Mag.

Beautiful Benelli! Congrats on your find!

Also like the Myrtle...is it stained? I have a 45 yr old myrtle stock on a Sako that is much yellower. Your's is nice!

Blockcaver, Nope, not stained. I got that blank from a fellow in Utah that got it from his brother in Oregon in 1965. The postal label, and stamps were right on the blank. They didn't package it, just slapped on a label and sent it off.

Some myrtle is dark, some is light. I've see it as dark as black walnut. Most is a light honey to dark honey color. Great wood to work with, and easy to finish. This is the only myrtle stock that I have made. Need to do another.

TwoTikkas, great score on that Winchester. Nice tiger stripe.

Man there's just something about a fine figured (if thats the right terminology) wood stocked gun that just makes me just want one bad. Its just sooooo hard to hunt with them cause a scratch would make me flip out. Beautiful guns guys.

I hear that a lot....that people like wood stocks but can’t stand to think about scratching them. Guess it makes some sense but I have a walnut stocked 270 as my main hunting rifle and dents/scratches just add character and are memories of the hunts you go on. Wood is pretty tough and can take a pretty good knock without denting or scratching. I look at my grandpa’s old 30-06 and it has a fair number of dents and scratches. Still works perfectly. If a guy really wants to, wood stocks can also be refinished and made new again.

I’m in the other camp and probably the minority....I really want to like (and buy) a synthetic stocked rifle for weight savings but I just can’t bring myself to it.

Some beautiful rifles gents!! Tough to beat a nicely figured piece of wood. When I get close to my PC, I’ll add a few. My grandad was a stockmaker, I have a few of his old rifles with some nice wood. I spent last winter building a stock for my grandmothers old pre 64 .375 h&h that turned out pretty nice also. Lookin forward to following this thread.

I was hoping this thread would see more action, lifes to short to hunt with a ugly rifle right? lol.

I'm by no means a gunsmith or stock maker, but I sold my trapping sled last year, so had to figure out a hobby for last winter. Why not learn to fit a rifle stock eh?

Pre 64 .375 H&H.

Its now topped with a vx3 1.75-6x32, seems to suit the setup well.

A few more randoms that were left behind by my granddad. This first one is a 6.5x55 BJI built on a M96, grandpa built it for me for my first hunting rifle when I was 7.

this one, he built for my dad when he was a wee boy, use to be a 7x57 in a brno ZG47, but has been reamed out to .280, one of my all time fav's to use.

A couple of the big bores, on left, is a custom old mauser 98 in .458 WM that he built for a Africa trip (airline lost the rifle, so he never did get to use it for its intended purpose). It had a steel butplate on it, iv removed it now, trying to decide on a nice pad to put on it.
And on the right, is the pre 64 .375 that I posted above, but with the stock that he had built for it. It was way to short for me, the reason I built a new stock for it (was my grandmothers hunting rifle)

Anyone else like the look of an antler grip cap?

Another fav, my old mannlicher 9.5x57 aka .375 rimless nitro express, its not a custom wood, but I do have a blank that was suppose to be a new stock for it. It shoots so nice tho, I don't think I will alter it, not sure what ill use this blank for, maybe a old brno 22 that I have on the shelf, maybe next winter.
