Picked up a box of Barnes Vor-tx 150 gr. TSX-BT in 300 WSM. That is the only box of 300WSM I can find “on the shelf” within 50 miles. I Will be hunting elk this year and shoot a Tikka T3 lite. Ideally I want to keep the shots under 300 yds but will practice out to 400 yds. Is a 150 gr. bullet going to be enough? Someone may have to school me on the pros and cons of 150 vs 168 vs 180 grain bullets.

A 150gr TSX is just fine in the .300WSM.

In a cup and core type bullet- I much prefer a 180gr for bigger game, but 150gr in a copper bullet peforms well.

I shot a 168 TTSX out of my 30-06 and it worked just fine on two elk. I'd say that if you can put it in the right place, 150 gr in an all-copper bullet should be plenty since it's going to retain more weight than a jacketed bullet.

A 150gr mono bullet that retains %90 of it's mass will penetrate farther than a 165gr or 180gr that loses %40-%50 of it's mass. It's a tough bullet and I'd not hesitate to use it for what you're looking to do with it.

I have seen dozens of elk fall to the TTSX 110-130 grain in .270 & 7mm if they shoot well out of your gun (some guns don't like the barnes)
they should work just fine

Thanks! Took the 150 gr. Barnes and a few Federal Soft point 180 gr. someone gave me to the range and shot yesterday. The 150 gr. Barnes grouping was far superior than the Federal 180 gr.
