UL stove review

So I was sitting around after dropping the kids off at school this morning and thought I would do a little ultra light stove review. I compared a Jetboil Sol system, a MSR Pocket Rocket 2 with a Toaks 650 ml UL pot/lid, and a Out Smart (also known as a BRS 3000 T), titanium stove, coupled with the same Toaks pot. To try to compare these as much apples to apples as I could, I used a new, large 16 ounce fuel bottle, and turned each stove up to maximum. For comparing the weights of each system, I only weighed the bare minimum that would go into the field for the JB Sol. I’m sure I was off by a couple seconds, give or take, on boil times because I did this by myself and it was a little difficult to coordinate everything right down to the second but they all brought to a rolling boil, 16 ozs. of cold tap water, in approximately 2 min. 10 seconds. The JB used 5 grams of fuel, and the Out Smart and Pocket Rocket both used 9 grams. I think the JB was more fuel-efficient, both because of the pot design and the insulation around the pot.

Here are the weights for each system as they would go into the field.

And here are a few size comparisons of each stove (same order).

Individual stove weights are as follows:

JB= 3.60 oz.
MSR= 2.55 oz.
BRS= 0.90 oz.

I would have figured the JB would have been a bit faster but is certainly used less fuel compared to the other two. I would make the assumption that is due to the flux ring cup more than the actual stove. I'd be even more interested to see what the results would be with a small fan turned on low setting a few feet away. Nice test and thanks

Would be interesting to see if you cold find a way to set the JB pot on the other two stoves and run the test without that change in variables.

Josh at Ruta Locura makes a kit for the JB that includes a carbon fiber lid, BRS stove, and bottom titanium cover/heat shield that allow you to put the "wings" of the stove up inside the JB pot, then the titanium heat shield also fits up inside there to help keep the heat contained. He says that the kit maintains the efficiency of the standard JB but reduces the overall wt. by 3 oz. (actually closer to 4 oz. according to what my JB system weighs). $50 for the kit. The BRS stove will also store up inside the pot with the heat shield then placed in there, keeping it all contained. This allows for 2-100 gram fuel canisters to be stored inside the pot.

So let me get this straight... by not using a jetboil I’m packing less than half the weight and my fuel canister weighs less faster?

That’s definitely another strike against JB hahaha.

Thanks for taking the time out to do the test and review!

I take an JetBoil with the discontinued Ti cup, and the tiny stove with Roto Luca kit as a back up. I’m more paranoid than an ounce counter. I take a tiny cot AND a pad to sleep on too :)

I have a sol, zero complaints. light enough and like how everything stores inside.
