Hey everyone,

What lighters are you taking with you for Backcountry use? I would be using mine mostly just for starting my stove but want to find a reliable torch-style one in case I get into trouble and need to start a fire. Not really looking to debate lighter vs matches vs steel but I guess if you feel strongly about it...

Thanks,
Tim

Bic in a ziplock has never let me down. Small, weigh nothing. Reliable. I keep a mini in my pocket, mini in my bino harness and full size in my pack. Mostly cause I lose lighters like crazy.

I keep a few cotton balls with Vaseline in a tiny ziplock also. Best thing out there for starting wet wood in any scenario

Bic mini in kill kit, food kit and bino harness. I run a few passes of electrical tape around each. Im sure there is another one floating around the pack somewhere also

Bic mini. I have like three of them and usually misplace 2.

Beware of getting one of those “torch” lighters, some of them are said to be best for wilderness adventures but they say they won’t work above 9,000 feet, soooo not necessarily the best choice for an elk hunt in the high country haha.

Big lighter for me, I usually buy a pack at Walmart every year. I always have a brand new one with me when I go into the woods.

I prefer the regular sized bic over the mini. When my hands are cold the minis can be hard to use.

Bics are no good if they get wet or if your fingers get wet, since you need your fingers to roll the striker.
Those push button butane lighters will fire no matter how wet your fingers are.

I have a sack full of different ones because I always talk myself into believing someone has figured it out, but they all suck. Bic lighters here, and even carry one long BBQ style for wood stove usage.

I pack multiple bics as well and then I toss match books in as well in multiple places. Casino books are free and weigh nothing. I think I'd have to pack a dozen to make an ounce. I know its overkill but at that weight penalty I do it anyways

Bic lighters here as well. If i need a torch I use the bic to light my stove and the stove makes a great torch. I have lit more than a couple wet fires with my gas stove. I 'll even stuff it inside the door of my tipi wood stove to get things cooking on frosty mornings.

3 Bic mini lighters (2 in my pack and 1 in my bino harness) plus a reliable fire starter that you trust. I use Trioxane which got us a fire started in some incredible bad shit one night while working in the mountains as a fisheries technician. We would have been in some real trouble without it and my fellow crew members had no other options. I carry at least two pucks in my gear at all times.

Bic full sized. Keep it in a ziplock, w other stuff.

Those arc-lighters are gaining traction no? My wife got one for lighting candles around the house.
