I had that idea last year to stick a sheeptarp in my kit and I was very thankful that I had. We were day hunting from a basecamp, so the weight wasn't a concern.
Let's face it. Even with fantastic rain gear, being out in a heavy rain just plain sucks! On two occasions where heavy rain came in, my hunting partner and I were able to quickly pitch the sheeptarp and crawl underneath (with our packs) for a couple of hours to wait out the rain in complete comfort. Ate some lunch. Took a nap. Built a small fire to keep warm and dry out some gear and worked on the strategy for the afternoon. It turned what would have been an absolutely awful afternoon - that quite honestly may have sent us back to camp early - into a refreshing break instead.
