There doesn't seem to be a bison page so I thought I would post here. On our second try at bison on the copper my wife was able to harvest a nice cow. Had two bulls picked out but just could not relocate them. Got to within 100 yards of 10 cows and picked out the oldest and biggest bodied one we could find. Spent six days total. Was cold and clear most days with a few stuck in the tent feeding the wood stove due to high wind. My wife was a trooper and amazes me more every day. Took us about six hours at -5 below to get the full cape off and totally broke down.

Congratulations, what an accomplishment. I'm sure many on here are familiar with this hunt because of Steve Rinella's book American Buffalo where he hunts the same unit. His story and his comments about that hunt in the book really make it clear what a tough hunt that is to pull off and the fact that most who draw the tag are not successful.

Did you buy a permit from Ahtna or find your critter below the highwater mark?

I tore through that book as fast as I could read.

Congratulations on a fine animal! I like your stove setup too.

Awesome!

And yes, I am only familiar with where this is because of Rinella book. It was so good I got the library to order in a copy 😉

I drew this tag about four years ago and was able to harvest an old bull below high water mark. We went in earlier this year and were unsuccessful. So we bit the bullet and bought the AHTNA pass and flew in. Then come to find out the area we were in was not on AHTNA land. It was just a good learning experience for the both of us. Of course if we didn't get the pass they would have been on the native land. I read the meat eaters book before I went on my hunt the first time and emailed him some questions. He actually called me back and we spoke for quite some time. He was a very nice guy.
