Is anybody running a 4 x 4 camper, I see there's some really cool sprinter chassis set ups. We want to put some miles on the hardtop but definitely want to be able to get off the beaten path and not worry about a rain storm leaving us stuck on the mountain.
Not looking to do 4 x 4 extreme stuff but just have the ability to drop it in 4WD.
Looking for pics and suggestions.

If your bank account is bottomless, earthroamer. But if you are a normal guy, four wheel campers make pop up truck bed campers made for off road use. I believe you can buy a shell and outfit it yourself if you're a diy guy.

Poking around expeditionportal.com will give you a million ideas.

Here is my current camper project. I purchased a 24' V nose with tandem 5200lb axles and have started to convert it to a camper.
I mostly use this just for weekend ATV trips, however, I plan on pulling it to Colorado in a year or two and using it for base camp.
I have added epoxy coated floors, painted the walls, added a 14,000BTU heating and cooling unit, side cabinets,
and a shore power connection with a breaker box. Also put in a 32" led tv and an old Xbox 360 that
I had from college just because they were in storage not being used. Most of the places we go have camper connections,
however, I have two champion 2000 inverter generators that powers everything if I need to power.
This project still has a long way to go. I plan on building a countertop under the TV,adding lots of storage and cabinets, possibly a shower and toiler in the future, pull down murphy bed in the back, etc. I may also flip the axles in order to lift the trailer because it rides very low currently. I am going to insulate the ceiling with 1" rigid foam board between the braces and then install a thin wood paneling over the entire ceiling.

I know this type of rig is not really what you are looking for bu I think that you might like one in a smaller size. Here are some pics of it currently.

you can always do this....lol.

Actually it is really nice, even though it is a tent. We carry it on the jeep, or the trailer(which is off road capable.)

We use it for a mobile base camp if we drive further than we want to head back the next day.

We had one for many years, (actually two over the course of about 12 years), it was the reason I bought a 1 ton diesel truck, and we loved it, but ended up selling it because we bought a cabin and just never used it anymore.

I've had a Northstar pop-up truck camper for over six years now. Highly recommended. They are a very respected company in the truck camper world.

I went the roof-top-tent on a trailer route. That way my truck is not tied up as part of my camp.

Awesome little setup there.

I've been considering the tent setup on a rack on my F150. How easy are they to setup and tear down? Whats stopping me now is I can setup and tear down my tents in a matter of 10-15 mins, so the $1500-$2k investment with a rack doesn't seem like it would save me much. Having that trailer and being able to leave it behind changes that though.

seriously look at unimogs if you have the funds, they're a mercedes product and specialize in the expedition type campers (among other business ventures)

Oh I've seen them, even if I had the funds I couldn't justify spending more on one of those in my house…

I'm with you there.... A buddy of mine down south bought one and it's a pricey little unit. In his retirement he and his wife travel NA in it. It's a spendy little (big) unit but it's impressive to say the least.

I picked up an M101A2 surplus military trailer a couple years ago for $450 from Govplanet.com. I had to drive from CO to Arkansas to pick it up, but otherwise, pretty painless. I havent done much with it yet, but plan on painting it and putting a custom canvas. Instead of a rooftop tent, Im using it to haul my 10x20 TurboTent, looking to do a solar system and 2 batteries, and have onboard hot water. These trailers are pretty much bomb proof.

I saw a pop-up add on facebook this morning, the Mercedes Benz dealer in Loveland, CO was having a sale on these vans. The 4X4 plain work vans (not RVs) were $50,000 - ish..
