So a friend brought this to my attention... I don't want to ruin the surprise for you... But it's bigger than lighted nocks...

I called FWP to confirm their dumb lawyer wording and it's indeed true..

Page 15 on the Ebook regs on the web page I believe...

This will be a game changer for sure! A very helpful tool!

I'll give it a few hours and see if anyone knows yet...

I don't hunt montana but are you possibly referring to the UAV portion? (aka drons) Don't even want to open that can of worms..

""Aerial Spotting The use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) for the purpose of locating, spotting or hunting big game, upland birds or other species under the management authority of FWP during commission‑ established hunting seasons is prohibited. Aircraft may not be used to locate big game animals for the purpose of: • Hunting those animals during the same hunting day after a person has been airborne or; • Providing information for another person for the purpose of hunting those animals within the same hunting day after being airborne""

I read through it all. I am not overly familiar with MT's fine print but seems pretty standard so not sure what you are referring to unless I am dumb at reading (Likely the case).

The way I read it, you can use game cameras as long as they're not the cellular type.

Motion-Tracking Devices and/or
Camera Devices
It is illegal for a person, while hunting, to
possess any electronic motion-tracking device
or mechanism that is designed to track the
motion of a game animal and relay information
on the animal’s movement to the hunter.

Corrections to printed 2017 Deer, Elk & Antelope Regulations
Page
15
Error – Motion-Tracking Devices and/or
Camera Devices – It is illegal for a person to
possess or use in the field any electronic or camera
device whose purpose is to scout the location of
game animals or relay the information on a game
animal’s location or movement during any
Commission-adopted hunting season.

Correction – Motion-Tracking and/or Camera
Devices – It is illegal for a person, while hunting,
to possess any electronic motion-tracking device or
mechanism that is designed to track the motion of a
game animal and relay information on the animal’s
movement to the hunter. A radio-tracking collar
attached to a dog that is used by a hunter engaged
in lawful hunting activities is not considered an
illegal motion-tracking device.

Yes! Game cameras are legal so long as they don't transmit real time information to the hunter. According to the lady at FWP I spoke with.

I dont think that is saying that cell is ok. I think that the picture being captured is in and of it self relaying that information regardless if you have to download the camera off a sad card.

I don't know why they can't keep it more black and white in their wording. But she said plain Jane trail cameras are now legal. But if its hooked to a wireless provider sending you updates it's not. And same with drones.

Interesting. I got my first game camera this year and was wondering about when I had to take it down. I messaged the MT FWP on facebook and they said "They have to be down when hunting season opens." But who's to say they knew of the change? I also didn't really like their answer, what hunting season are they referring to, bow antelope, bow elk/deer? What if I'm only a rifle hunter and the season doesn't start til Oct? Very confusing. I guess that's probably why they made the change, it would solve that problem.

The 'or' was changed to 'and'.

Game cameras can be used during season as long as they dont relay photos back to you. If you have to physically go to the camera to download images its legal. GW at bowhunter ed class I taught a couple weeks ago confirmed this, actually brought it to our attention. I still think its written ambiguously, but that is the intent.
