What has everyone found to be the most reliable most cost effective way to ship items?

USPS, UPS, and FedEx.

Looks like you are in CA. GSO
Covers the southwest and can be very good if you get setup with them. Otherwise USPS followed by UPS and FedEx cost wise.

I have also found that you get better rates at Independent shipping places vs a UPS store. They seem to always have he highest rates for some reason.

DEPENDS. Weught, size, origin and destination are vital to answer definitively. Also the timeframe. Slower is cheaper.

Same. I live in a pretty rural town. It's the only post office I can get to in a 20 mile radius.
