Which one? Leupold bx-4 12x50's or vortex kaibab hd 15x50's and why?

Do you mean Kaibab 15x56? Will you be using these on a tripod?
The 12x50’s will be much lighter and should freehand much better.

If you’re willing to carry the weight; about 3#, then I would go with the 15x56’s. You should probably move over to the Optics forum and read recommendations for other 15x56’s; search “15x56”.

Besides the weight and the difficulty of free-handing the 15's, low-light performance might be something else to keep in consideration. Here's a good explanation of that on Nikon's website:

I definitely think binoculars are preferable to a spotting scope for long glassing sessions, and when the sun's out, those 15's will be the ticket. I guess it just depends on how you value versatility vs. specialization.
