Subalpine Versatility??

Considering switching a good deal of gear over to Subalpine. My question is on the pattern. I have grown very confident in Fusion Pattern but been troubled by a great deal of durability issues lately.

Although I plan to use open country for late season and exposed terrain hunts but my hunts tend to switch from Timberline to Rocky outcropping in a single day. They have pushed Subalpine so hard to be a early season sub 50 yard pattern. How versatile however will it really be? Will it work just as good at 15 yards as it will stalking up on a Muley from 150 yards away or work in some exposed open rocky outcrop or grassland as much as it will in Timberline.

I’ll dress and use patterns accordingly however a pattern needs to be versatile when the hunt changes landscapes multiple times. How are the reports of Subalpine so far this year? Any input?

I use open country and solids, so i can't really say for sure but the sub appears to be quite versatile to me. Probably a little dark for above treeline, but I firmly believe that movement trumps camo pattern every time. If it makes you feel more confident, use it. It looks really cool. If I was just starting to build a Sitka collection I would buy it.

Can someone provide some pics of it from a good distance away?

What really tells the store is pictures in black & white similar to what ungulates see.

Absolutely I agree. Just curious about the pattern at distance due to its darker palette compared to Open Country. I think it is one of the best patterns right now for close range but let’s face it. Most of my encounters with game begin quite a ways away. At times also in terrain above the tree line or in grassy/rocky exposures.

My moose nearly stepped on me. I am amazed at the way the Subalpine seems to change color in different lighting.

I primarly use OC but Subalpine seems to work...even if only to make me less visible to other bipeds. Certainly worked out on this day, went to full draw at 10 feet.

The Core Hoodies w/ built-in facemask are the best items SG has produced yet. Concealment is great and bugs won't bug ya. 12 days in Canada, no stink.

IMO subalpine is darker and less open. More likely to blob at a distance in black and white than open country or ASAT or something similar. Having said that, my inventory of subalpine stuff is growing. It fits my primary hunting locations in the east so far because our leaves haven't Dropped. It just blends great in vegetation. I have had several deer and a couple of people pass by me at fairly close range and not had any issues.

Man that one pic in the trees is nuts!!! Just would love to see some one drop some long distance pics off here, that’s where I’m a little hung up. I know my Fusion and Cipher vanish both near and far. I’m just iffy about Subalpine from a far.

This is the only pic I have of myself just yet. Need to get back out there and take some assorted long distance pics before I invest anymore into it.

By and large contemporary camo patterns are made to fool hunters and not game - don't put too much thought into it. More important to a hunter's success is what material the camo is put on.

Very true and the writing is on the wall, this thread is simply just fellow hunters driving some sense into me over something so silly as this. Lol

Guess I just want to know I’m not gonna turn into a giant dark blob when I’m still closing in on game if I’m a good 150 yards before I can get into that “marketed” 50 yards or less range like they talk about or still be pretty concealed if I have to move in and out of the shadows above the Timberline like on some rocky outcropping or grasslands like in a alpine meadow.

I know this whole thread is silly fellas but when your investing this much money in new gear you want to have confidence in the pattern just as much as the materials

Thanks for putting up with me guys lol

I used Sitka Subalpine for all my hunts this fall. That included dry high dessert in UT, lush high country in CO and thick timber in Idaho. I was happy how it blended in all environments. I never felt like the animals were noticing me.
I agree that you can kill plenty of animals in neutral toned solids but prefer to take my chances on the camo doing it's job.
Subalpine has proven extremely versatile so far.

That’s good to hear, the more and more I look at the few pieces I have there is much much more bone and light brown segments than there are green and dark brown. Honestly after laying it right next to some of my Fusion pieces it has no more dark in it than Fusion. I think it will do just fine even at a decent range away. Might very well be more versatile than Open Country as time presents more field reports and pics.

Was able to take a few pics from a distance both of which I turned into Black and White. One where I stepped out into the light and one in the shadows.

So far so good. It’s actually the exact opposite. I was afraid it was gonna turn into a dark blob from afar but in all reality it’s much much lighter than what I originally thought. That should aid in making this very effective in exposed rocky outcrops, large alpine meadows with mostly grasslands and areas above the Timberline. Should be a good all around pattern.
