Are you trying to market it to the DoD or service members? Just curious, because there’s a big difference.

The special ops community can (local purchase) items, the mainstream Army has to go through the acquisition process. The latter being a PITA.

For the most part military acquisition will come from a need first, then after that need is recognized there will be a procurement item description posted for contract bid period so companies can compete to fill that need. There is a site that shows all of the dod contracts posted for bids. You can scour that and see if there is a contract your item or services can fill. Marketing to private defense companies may be a better way to test the waters, and you can sell directly to them without the gov acquisition process.

Alot depends on the cost, your margins, it's application in the field, perceived need vs actual need and the number of potential consumers. Without specific nobody can recommend a single course of action other than to require signing of an NDA before disclosing any proprietary information. Patent and TM may or may not be key priorities.

If the idea is worth a patent, start there to protect yourself.
A buddy of mine had a great idea when we were in the Marines and he submitted it up the chain of command. It was for a storage bracket. It never went any where. We fabricated some of our own and used them.

This is not applicable to every product. For example, if your product is a food product, energy drink, etc then you only invite competition by putting patent info on the USPTO site. Chinese companies comb thru that site looking for new ideas to steal daily. Coca Cola remains a trade secret, the recipe is protected better this way. Absent any facts about the nature of your product, a free consultation with Patent/TM atty is your best option.
