I was thinking of heading up north of gunnison to do some trout fishing in the next couple days. Was thinking I’d tent camp one night but all of the parks are closed still up there. Is it cool in Colorado to just pop up a tent in a pull off and camp for the night? Don’t want to get a ticket or something.

Dispersed canping on BLM and National Forest is legal in Colorado, support Public Land and keep it in Public hands.

Runoff hasn’t really started but North of Gunni there is still snow, what’re you going to fish?

Snow is still deep, fishing there may be iffy at best.
Better take some warm clothes as spring is not here yet.

Watch and read the signs as you access the forest, couple of places close to Denver are starting to have lots of rules, only parking in designated spots and same with camping. Farther West you get from front range hordes, the less rules there are.

Quite a few little pull offs along the taylor where a man can throw out a bag undisturbed. You should have the place to yourself. Enjoy.

The one caveat is to make sure your are not in a special district. For example, up by Red Feather lakes, there is the Canyon Lakes Ranger District that is inside the National Forest and you can't just camp anywhere as they have designated primitive spots. Once you are out of the special district and back into the regular National Forest, then it is back to normal as far as camping anywhere.
