What to do with your gun while scouting pre-season?

I figure it depends on the different state laws, but what do you do with your gun if your scouting for a day (or few) before the season opens? I mainly bow hunt so I haven't come across this yet but would be nervous leaving my rifle in my tent while I'm out scouting.

I’d take it, just in case you see a coyote. If it’s legal and all....

When rifle hunting I always take mine a few days before season. If it's more than a week before, I'll take a varmint gun.

back in the day folks left rifles in the tent- I used to pass many tents with rifles inside with the flap open. or leaning against a tree near by with an empty camp -no people or stock anywhere around.

I take mine with me. met a warden 15 miles back once the day before season and had a chat with no consequences.
