Carry on size is an airline thing.

Alaskan airlines used to be one of the best airlines out there. We'll see if their new mergers will degrade this a bit

On Alaska's site their new guidance is 22" x 14" x 9" or no more than 45 linear inches. So a compressed Exo 5500 is 41 linear inches so it should be ok on Alaska with minimal amount of gear. I just checked TSA's website and couldn't find anything on size requirements so they might leave that up to the airline.

That's great I didn't see the total linear inches, so an exo fits that compressed thanks

I have flown with my pack numerous times. It helps if the profile is inside your shoulders, never once been questioned about it. I do take my waist belt off, it helps fit in the overhead bin a lot easier, plus you don't look like "that guy" trying to cram 10 pounds of crap into a 5 pound sack getting your pack in the bin.
