  • I want to and I have the ability to take off Sept 6-19 but I'm debating whether I want to make the solo drive again. There is some really thick spots with downed trees in the area. There's lots of water in the area just have to use a filter. And I would recommend taking a pen fishing rod if you enjoy fishing at all. Seems like every stream is full of cutthroat trout
I do alot of still hunting and cold calling. I've heard lots of bugles but never got into the situation to hunt a screaming bull. But I've always hunted the first week. I know the biggest mistake I made the first year was spending to much time looking for elk than actually hunting elk. They are there just gotta figure out what they're doing.
If your remotely interested in shooting a bear get the tag. I could've have killed 6 so far. Black, chocolate, and cinnamon colored. I usually camp around 10k and hunt all the way to tree line. I've passed on chasing bulls both years because there was no way I could get them out by myself without a packer. The free ranging sheep herds can really screw up an area. It isn't super rugged terrain compared to Idaho but it is a long way up those mountains.
Hi I'm also from Pa. North Central Potter county. Ive hunted unit 71 2 of the last 3 years. Last year I went solo, looking at going again this year but trying to avoid driving solo again. It flat out sucks driving that far solo. 71 definitely can get a little crowded between hikers and hunters so think outside of the box. I hunt the wilderness area. There's really no where there that you can just hike and get away from people so try to find the sweet spot between the guys that go deep and the guys that hunt near the roads. I've not killed an elk but should have killed a few. Ive talked to hunters there that hadn't seen an elk in 10 days but I've seen elk pretty much every day both years. First year my buddy screwed up an 8 yard shot on a 5x5, and I misjudged and shot under a cow. I called in a good bull last year but he was 8 yards past my shooting lane, called a cow in that I wasn't ready for while calling to some bulls, and was seconds away from a shot on one bedded down.
