Hilleberg Rogen vs Hilleberg Anjan2 vs Hilleberg Niak

I have used many mountain tents all over BC and some of AB, year-around, for stints of a month or so and often solo. I started backpack camping here aged 17 in spring, 1964 and working in the bush the following year. I have had four Hilles in the past decade and now have a Saivo and a Niak, my...

    New Bag

I highly recommend a Western Mountaineering Kodiak MF or, my choice, a Sequoia MF. Buy the 7 ft. size as the extra room is well worth the weight and $$$$. Nobody makes a "better" bag than WM and it will last longer than you will.

    DIY BC Backcountry Goat Hunt

Yep and that bow is not quite the equal of an appropriate rifle when packing meat out to your vehicle-horse in the "hyperphagic" season which is in Sept. in the Kootenays. With a competent backup I can see bow hunting then and there, but, if solo, I seem to always pack one of my .338WM crf...

    Western Mountaineering bags and moisture

I have spent 60+ years in the bush of BC and Alberta, BCFS, AFS, CCG*and so on. I have used-owned most of the big name bags, MMW, Pioneer, Fairey, FF, Integral Designs, WM and others, including a Shocking Blue. I have four synthetic bags and three down bags, one a custom ID winter bag and two...

    FNG from British Columbia

Where from, I am a Nelsonite, lived all over the WK and much of BC, still go home as often as I can. Been packing since 1956 and can help if you like. PMs?

    Whose 8-Man Tipi?

SO for me, my experiences with them over about 3 years have been simply outstanding. Might buy a Redcliff or a 12 person this year, if, I cannot swing the northern BC outfitted trip I am looking at now.

Best option for a one and done bag

It is TOO BIG for him, given his physique. The fit of a given bag to the user is very important and short, slender folks need a bag with a shoulder diameter of 60-62", while a Badger has, IIRC, 66". The Versalite is WARMER and LIGHTER than the Badger and owning examples of both the Microshell...

Best option for a one and done bag

The Shocking Blue, IS a superb bag, about the same warmth to my feeling as the Versalite, based on owning-using one for five years and owning an Alpenlite, Terralite and Sequoia, as well. Since, it is a "broad" bag, relatively, I recommended the VL as he is a smaller, slender person. Mirage, is...

    New Stone Glacier Tent

To be fair, we must always compare tents of the same size and weight and this is where, IMHO, this new one really shines. It offers a LOT of useable space for the overall weight and I REALLY like that. For my uses, 95% in quite heavy forest canopy cover, and exceot in truly horrible BC weather...

    ice ax and crampons

I ordered one when this thread started from the Vancouver, BC, SMC dealer shown on the SMC site. It arrived at my home in the Fraser Valley on Jan.02 and is much like the old Black's wooden handled one, 90cm, I used for years in the '70s and found a huge help in BC mountain trekking. I love how...

Best option for a one and done bag

Western Mountaineering Versalite regular righthand zipper. Superb quality, very light for warmth and if you are righthanded, you can get to your rifle quicker if camping solo in Grizzly country. NOBODY, currently offers better bags than WM, Valandre is as good and I have owned/used most of the...

    New Stone Glacier Tent

I spoke with Pete at SG, about 2 hrs. ago and he was so polite and helpful. Based on that call and the info. here, I AM buying one when they start shipping and may well pre-order, depending on my income tax obligations this year. But, this is THE tent I have been wanting to fit between my...

What model Hilleberg tent for 2 person 3+ season?

I have now had four Hilles, from 2009, IIRC, and mine are a Saivo, THE tent for really foul weather and heavy, wet BC snowfalls overnight. I hope to be using it later this month or in February, in one of the highest snowfall areas in North America, where I was born and raised. I also have a...

    Kifaru slick 0 vs 20

Seriously, the VERY LAST thing you want to do in solo spike camping is to "eat less" and not hydrate yourself fully. In fact, all joking aside, this is crucial to your comfort thus ability to hunt hard and even your survival. I have used most of the "big name" bags both down and synthetic since...
