59 year old flatlander from San Diego. My MO is park the wife in a trailer at 6,500ft. Hike in with a 38-40lb pack for 6-7 days (no water but katadyne filter). Probably 10-15lbs on my body with bow, bear spray, knife, bino's, range finder. I set up camp on a ridge at 7,800-8000ft. Spend one...
Still haven't heard back from the original poster. My guess, he has no in-laws in Victor. Good first rule is establish veracity and I'm assuming he failed, since he didn't respond. Next step would be check credibility...what's his definition of steep terrain, where in Utah, how long does he...
Above seems like a pretty moronic way to ask me to PM coordinates of my favorite elk spot. Maybe I just asked if his in-law in Victor knew mine? Loosen them panties a bit, take a deep breath and have some faith in fellow hunters! Cheers mate...
In my short 3 years elk hunting, all my encounters (less than 50yds) almost evenly spaced 1/3 AM, 1/3 10-4PM and 1/3 evening. Glassing, more in the evening/morning.
Don't quit. Don't overpack. Don't let noises outside the tent freak you out. Don't go too deep.
Stay hydrated. Be physically fit. Have comfortable pack/boots. Be able to carry it all day (<40lbs). Carry a map/compass for when GPS dies. Minimum of 2 sources of light (1 a headlamp). Easy...
One power bar in the AM. Munch on trail mix 4-5 handfuls for lunch. Mountain House for dinner with a shot of scotch and a chocolate snack. Sleep like a baby each night but when I come down after 6 days I'm 5-10lbs lighter and feel great! For my two weeks in Idaho 6 days on above I come down...
Always carry a pack cover. Stick it in my side pouch with my game bags. Used it once and it was awesome, as it rained steady all day. I hunt solo backpack in rugged mts of Idaho. Usually when it rains, I stand under a thick pine till it blows by. Everything stays amazingly dry.
Last day of a...
I still hunt the thick stuff (my choice as I believe it's where all the pressured elk migrate to). Mid-day (10AM-2pm, for the last 3 years, I've seen nice bulls grazing at a leisurely pace up to 30 yards away during this time. AM and PM I'm calling and have about the same amount of encounters...
Same size (58 now) but last few years I've gone to wider boots. Also lost a lot of padding on the balls of my feet so inserts help keep them from bruising while rucking.
Broke a toe bad, coming out of a swim in a triathlon. Jammed it in the bike and then run shoes. Hurt like heck. This was 3 weeks before deer season and it hurt like hell with my hunting boots...neighbor tape helped but also think about either cutting some padding off the inside of the boot or...
In Idaho Mts (8500-9000ft) I use a zero bag. Early Sep it is usually unzipped or just draped over me and the groundpad. Every once in awhile, temps drop as a storm rolls through and it's nice to be toasty with it zipped. Had snow last year on my last two nights mid Sep. Also, 40 degrees in...
