It's Me vs. The Wife... you guys tell me who wins

I think you already know the argument is over before it began. Your wife will get her way. 🤣 butttt you may want to remind her that adding a third person can make or break the trip. Even if you are promised the best guide ever, things change and you may get the last minute kid who’s never guided...

New guy from Eastern Oregon. Glad to be here

Welcome! I’m probably just over the hill from you on the other side of the Owyhees in Idaho. Excited to see you share your out of state adventures when you draw those tags. It’s always exciting getting to check out new areas and put your skills to use. -Clint

Keeping bear meat vs hide only... what do you do?

It’s an interesting topic and obviously opened up a lot of good discussion and different perspectives. I guess I didn’t realize how many hunters left such great table fare on the mountain. A co-worker was showing me a bear hide/head he had killed this last fall, I asked how much meat and fat he...

So how many are going back and forth between WY General Random Special and Cheapie fee?

I’m in the same boat. Been studying the odds pretty hard and trying to decide how aggressive I want to be. I’d like to use my WY elk points in the next few years. I’m hoping to cash in my AZ elk points on a late rifle hunt (9 points) but I thought I’d draw out last year and didn’t. So hoping...

    Generac generators for the home?

I had Generac come out and give me a quote. He explained with diagrams what all they needed to run with conduits and tie in with the gas meter and my electrical panel. All stuff I could handle, but he did say I would need a larger meter, so keep that in mind if you have natural gas. The quote...

What’s the coolest thing you found in the back country

Got flown out on a caribou hunt this year in the north brooks range. We were placed on a lake about 25-30 miles off the haul road and traveled up a creek to harvest a bull we had spotted a long ways from camp. We killed the bull about 4-1/2 miles from the lake and packing the meat back to camp I...

    Best Puffy?

Another vote for the Kifaru LLP full zip. I have the KUIU Ultra Down, Kenai as well as a couple cheaper ones. But always end up taking my Kifaru Parka. Even though it’s not the lightest or most compress-able. I lived in it in AK and stayed warm in the wind.

    Mental Stability in the Field.

I hate losing more than I like winning. So I just think about driving home without a punched tag, and realizing it was only because I gave up early. I’ve had those 8-10hr drives and I’ll never have another one because of mental toughness. You spend your whole year dreaming, planning, prepping...

    Who is dropping their standards?

I struggle with this topic. Because on one hand I agree with some of the comments about having a standard and sticking to it. I’ve eaten multiple tags and convinced others I was hunting with to hold off on younger less mature animals during hunts to try and find the age class and size we had set...

    Dropping pack to stalk...

If you have a kifaru lid they have straps in the back velcro that you can slide over your shoulders and go. All the items you mentioned would fit in there no problem. That being said, I used to drop my pack all the time during stalks and one day I just realized it’s not worth it. I practice...

The do it all self-defense pistol

Glock 20. You can never kill a home invader too dead. And 10mm is perfect for defense of any predator in the lower 48. 15+1 mag capacity helps if you’re not a great shot as well. My buddy and I hunt in griz country in Montana and both switched from wheel guns in .44 to 10mm for the extra round...

    FNG Southern Idaho Resident

Started off the year on the right foot! Alaska was incredible and we smacked two nice bulls and a wolf on our trip. The views were worth the price of admission and we enjoyed every soggy minute on the tundra. We saw griz, wolverine, fox, musk ox, hundreds of bou, caught grayling and char and ate...

    New to Idaho

I see this is your second post about hunting gear/clothes and hunting in SW Idaho. I am close by, I’m assuming. I live in Nampa. If you ever want to discuss gear or clothing or general approach to mule deer/elk feel free to message me. Clint

Wondering if there is anyone on here that has retired early (FIRE Movement)

This is a great thread to start. I think we all look forward to that day when we can comfortably say we’re done working. I’m 36 and have been thinking about how/when I want to be done, and my goals to get there. One thing I’ve noticed (I work for a family owned construction company) is that the...
