Question for Easterners who have Ventured West!!

I think being physically fit for a mountain hunt is as important as the weapon you hunt with. You have to be able to get to the game, then you have to be able to get yourself and your harvest (hopefully) packed out.

    Cooler Question

I have a 25 hour straight through drive from my elk camp to home. I use dry ice (separated from the meat in the cooler with cardboard). Also, I've learned that it has taken me two (2) 120-quart coolers per elk. The last hunt, my group killed four bulls, and we needed eight (8) 120 quart coolers.

    Tennessee Deer Hunter

The weekend after I️ returned from Idaho elk hunting, it was the Tennessee youth deer season. Both of my kids were able to get deer on this hunt. My little girl (10) passed on several does to get her first buck, and my son (a seasoned vet at 13) was able to close the deal on one as well. The...

    Public Land Whitetail Hunt

Illinois during the rut has been good to me, but you do have to contend with lots of people. I️ found success in hunting pinch points and escape corridors within a 1/2 mile radius of the best buck sign I️ found. Everyone piled in on the scrapes and rubs, and bumped the deer right to me. Sent...

    Age this Bull

Hey guys, I️ was fortunate to take this bull this fall. A local taxidermist told me at a glance the bull was at least 5 to 6 years old. I️ took a picture of the jaw bone to compare to charts for aging. I️ wish I️ had sent it off to get an accurate age, but this is the best I️ can do now...

    Autoloader for wife

The M2 in my opinion is worth the extra $500.00. It is easy to operate, and the inertia driven operation doesn't require much maintenance. I shoot an SBE II and love it. Duck hunters talking shotguns is like car guys arguing Chevy vs Ford though, lol. In the end, a gun that fits her shoulder...

OnX failed me when I needed it. Iphone version RANT

I use OnXHunt in conjunction with other devices and have had good success. I’ve had a similar situation as the original post, but I found that when I had the blank screen and the blue dot that my I-phone had briefly received a cellular signal and the app automatically switched from “off-line” to...

    Picking who shoots 1st Elk???

We split up and for each is own. If we were together, I would play the game "I win...you lose". Just kidding. If you have some good, like minded hunting partners a simple coin toss will get it done. I am happy when my group is successful.

    Best non custom mountain rifle

I really like my Browning Hell's Canyon X-Bolt .300 win mag. It is a good shooting gun, adjustable trigger, fluted barrel, light; and I think it looks cool  Killed my bull with it last year at 300 yards, and that made it cooler.

"Accepting the Challenge of Western Hunting," By Rokslide Member Justin Smith

Sovapatriot, thank you for the review. Time in the wilderness is key to harvest in most cases. Be prepared mentally and physically, and you will have a wonderful time. When I hunt, I put everything I have into filling my tag; but in the event it does not happen I leave with knowledge to carry...
