What size and brand game bags?

I make my own about 14"x30". I've found that size to work well for two cylinders side-by-side in my backpack at about 60 lbs each when totally full. I can squeeze a bone-in mulie quarter in there(sometimes requires a bit of trimming on rears), and boned elk quarters fit easily, even with the...

    Help with WORK boots

Xwhatever on Thorogoods. Hell I even wear them out on dates they're so comfortable. Mine are going on something like 6 years of construction work, although concrete is now taking it's toll on the leather because I just don't have time to clean and treat them weekly (concrete eats through...

Strategies for locating animal after the shot when solo

Compass and rangefinder are real useful tools. Recent tool that comes in real handy (for stalks also) is to take a picture with your phone. Marking the spot on a sat image can work sometimes too.

    2018 Elk Meat Pole

Moments later, my plans to pack out the four miles to my truck in the dark over an exposed ridge were halted by three second counts between lightening and thunder. It was raining so hard I couldn't wear my glasses. I got everything in game bags and spent the night under my plastic from my kill...

    2018 Elk Meat Pole

Cow #3 from the Jarbidge Wilderness. 9 mile packout with 112 lbs (split my cow with a buddy). Slept in the wall tent and went back in the next morning to pack out cow #4 + my spike camp and two weeks of food. 90 lbs for 9 miles on the second trip. Cows #1 and #2 got split between four of us and...

    Trekking Poles for Tipi

This^ when I'm solo and am hunting far from my spike camp. I also pitch mine with poles and then guyline it to adjacent trees above most of the time. Then I can take the poles out and have extra room inside. If yours doesn't have guylines at the peaks, you can gather the end with a rock inside...

    Carrying meat in/on your pack?

I use an 85 liter internal frame and just put two quarter bags inside my pack on top of my gear. I use a compactor bag over the game bags to keep blood out of my stuff.

    Successful Himalayan Snowcock Opener

All four birds went straight to the taxidermist haha. I believe that is what he was shooting, although admittedly I am not much of an expert on shotguns. I just use my beater 870 that's been dropped a dozen times haha. Thanks for all the kind words. It was probably one of the hardest hunts...

    Steri Pen

No. I have a SteriPen and a couple Sawyers. I use the Sawyers primarily because they are a lot lighter, but I've never worried about using the SteriPen. I typically use the SteriPen where I'm going to leave it somewhere during freezing temps and I can't protect the Sawyer. I.e. I leave a...

    Pad Width

I have a standard xlite, xtherm, and an uninsulated klymit. I'm 5'10 165 lbs. I'm comfortable on the TAR pads at 20", although if they were any narrower it would annoy me. I find the 23" Klymit pads to be roomy. I actually like them a bit more than the TAR pads as far as comfort goes. I make...
