Mav always has something to say to stir the pot, based on his wealth of knowledge in the hinterlands of Alaska.

Good luck on your hunt, goats sure are fun.
Thanks Nick. Can't wait to share the story.

My best rifle for long distance is without a doubt my 300 RUM Sendero II with a Vortex 6-24x50. I'm good out to 800 yards, but the setup weighs 15.5lbs.

I've only been on one goat hunt, and am getting ready for another... but I live up here and spend a ton of time in those mountains.

There is no way anyone I know would carry that thing around. Plus, something 800 yards away ain't happening unless you're shooting across a whole drainage - and then you'll have the problem of going over to get the now dead goat.

I hunted goats out of Seward last year.
For what it's worth, I packed my long range rifle the whole time. Mine only weighed 12.2.
A month after I killed my goat I sold my gun. Yes I could've killed trophy goats all day long @ 800yds. But it's just not practical! I killed my goat at 200yds.
I know own a tikka light 300wm w/Leupold vx-3i cds 3.5x10.
Love my new setup!! Way lighter too:)

thanks all
Last weekend, I bought a Tikka T3 Lite in 7mm mag and topped it with a Leopold VX3 3.5x10 40.
I put a box of shells through it and the last two 3-shot groups at a 100yds could be covered with a quarter.

Coon:

As of last night, it now looks like I'm going to have a guy in the valley, as well. We'll look for your camp from the air.

Getting ready for my first goat hunt in AK this Sept. I went with my Weatherby ultralight in .308 which comes in just under 6lbs with the scope. shoots the 168gr TTSX great. I'm having to keep my pack weight to 50lbs so light was very important. Good luck on your and let us know how it goes.

Hardest hunt I've ever been on.

Of course, i heard that a lot, for years, while i planned a goat hunt. Nothing, i mean NOTHING, could prepare me for hard this actually was. And I'm in great shape.

Dude, that is a bruiser! Congratulations! How big? I'm going to venture to guess that he's over 10". Nice job indeed. WE NEED A STORY!!

Licking my wounds in an anchorage motel right now. I fly out in 7 hours (1:30am AK time). Toenails are popping off. Hardest hunt. Hiked over 40 miles in 4 days. Firtst shot this big billy at 542 yards. Needed a couple more in him to finally stop him.

542 yards with a bow!!! No wonder it took more than one shot.
Instead of licking your wounds, you should be sucking down some cold suds right now. Hell, you earned it!

Hahaha. I'm the idiot that brought a rifle and a bow. Just wanted some extra weight to lug around i guess.
