I’m looking at a spotting scope for my mom. She’s 70, but active in the outdoors both hiking and nature observing. She really enjoys photography and liked looking through my Meostar 82, but the weight and price is beyond what she wants.

I think a 65mm model will work well for her. She will likely digiscope with her phone to keep weight down. Her budget is around $750, but a little flexibility.

Some ideas I have are:
1. Kowa 663/4 (missed a deal recently in classifieds)
2. Older 62mm Televid (not sure on performance between APO and non) and performance against newer midrange optics

Other ideas needed.

AG,
You probably know my usual spiel, I'm all about Swaro, Leica,...but a vortex razor 65mm will likely leave her very happy with its view and function. If she glassed with a ATS 65mm HD or 62mm APO, she'd likely want one but her budget and the increasing rarity of the 62 apo may preclude that. Get her the Razor or even the Kowa 663 and she'll probably love either.

2 cents worth.

I’d go with the Vanguard Endeavor HD over the razor, use the money saved and get a novagrade digiscope phone setup as well.

A friend of mine recommends the endeavor too.
