I went with the Pentax k5ii because of the weather resistance and the image stabilization in the body. My thinking was that with the IS in the body I could get older lenses cheap off eBay, and that's mostly true. I have the 18-135 and a Sigma 70-300 I got for $70 shipped off eBay. The Pentax 55-300 is in my future. I also have a Tamron 150-500, but the images are a little better with the Sigma and it is substantially smaller and lighter. What I am excited about now is I just picked up a HPG M2016 Buttpack. I can fit the camera with the 18-135 on it in a neoprene case, the Sigma lens, batteries/filters/ect in it with room to spare. It goes on the Umlindi and Ute like a lid, or as a shoulder bag. It's been the answer I have been looking for for carrying the setup.

Clinch,

Check out the classifieds at pentaxforums.com. I've seen some of the 55-300 HD WR lenses come across there lately. With the new 55-300 PLM lens out, many are unloading their HD version. However, the new lens won't work with your K-5II body so just go with the HD WR. That said, since I picked up the DA* 300mm prime, I haven't touched my 55-300. I still have it as a light weight option for when I have to hike in with other gear but the DA* blows it away. It just depends on what you are shooting to determine if you "need" one.

Also, post up your HPG bags as I'd love to see how you are carrying stuff. I still need to post up all my stuff but the weather's been too nice so I'm out shooting everyday.

colonel00, here are a couple shots. That's my Umlindi with the pals pocket and Butt Pack on the top. That's also my Vortex Summit ssp that rides there whether it's on the pack or in shoulder bag mode (murse). Less than a minute from lid to shoulder bag or vis versa.

I have a Nikon D-610. Various lenses but the newest is a Tamron SP 150-600mm F/5-6.3 that I got on sale and have not had time to play with. Looking to get a good pan lens so I can attach my camera body to my spotter.

Thanks Clinch. Looks interesting. I'm still working on an idea I have. Just need to get it made.

bobhunts, man I wish they made a 150-600 in a K mount. Best I can (within reason) do is the Pentax 150-450 WR which is on my list or a Bigma 50-500 or 150-500. Sadly, the Bigmas just seem to be a little soft and slow.

Fun little random photo, here's my setup today out at a refuge at low tide. K-3 II with the 300mm and 1.4x TC. I also mounted a camcorder in the hotshoe so I could take a little video of the birds.

colonel00, I've been doing some reading and that 300mm gets some good reviews. I have that tamron 150-500 but the images are soft enough that I'm better off cropping with pics taken with the Sigma at 300mm. How does the 300mm do with the 1.4 teleconverter? Have you tried a 2x?

The DA*300mm is a fantastic lens. While it isn't "cheap" for a 300mm f4, under $1K is pretty good. A 300mm prime is nice but it can be a challenge to get moving birds in frame. With the 1.4x WR TC, it is fantastic as well. Below are three examples from the other day shot at 420mm (300 + 1.4x TC) and then cropped in a little further. I'll also add that you need good light though as the TC will cost you a stop of light so I'm at F5.6 in these shots. For slower action I could stop down a little and have a slower shutter speed.

As far as I know, they don't make it in a K mount. Sure would be nice if they did. Other than that, I don't know much about them.

In the last couple of weeks I sold these two older kit lenses.

Nikon 55-200mm VR AF-S f/4-5.6G ED
Nikon 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 VR

I purchased the 18-140mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR to cover the same range in one all around lens.

Next on my list is probably the Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 II for wide angle and some night photos.
Will probably upgrade the body to a D5500 or D5600 later this summer.

Colonel00, I saw on the one photo a day thread your Milky Way pic and the mention of a new lens. What lens is that. Nice pic by the way

Just seeing this for some reason. I actually picked up a Bower (rokinon/samyang) 24mm f1.4. Actually, I picked up a used one from the Pentax forums that was alright and then I ordered on from B&H so I'll compare them as I go. However, the one from B&H is showing some real promise

Picked up a used D5600 with 2930 clicks today on Craigslist. It came with 2 lenses that I already had and previously sold off (Nikon 55-200mm VR AF-S f/4-5.6G ED, Nikon 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR). Will end up selling these along with my D5000 to help cover the cost of the upgrade.

I am in a hurry to test it out and see the improvement going from a 2009 to a 2017 DSLR.

Finally rounded out my kit and jumped on a deal on a lightly used Tokina 11-16 II f/2.8 that included a circular polarizer. Looking forward to some shooting some land and nightscapes.
