Kifaru bag sizing compared to traditional backpacking pack

I have the Reckoning and the Osprey bags and the Reckoning is substantially bigger. After you include the side pockets, meat shelf, and potentially a guide lid, there is no question that there is a TON of space available in the Reckoning. I don't own the Fulcrum, and I'm sure it is a great...

3/4" vs. 1" Buckle and Webbing Question

Pods, you must have telepathy. I was curious on the weight savings, so you read my mind. Thanks!!! You also make very good points on versatility with the 1" straps & buckles and connection to existing frames with 1" connection points. Next question... What is the weight savings on 1 yard...

3/4" vs. 1" Buckle and Webbing Question

Does anybody out there have any experience using 3/4" nexus side release buckles and 3/4" webbing over the standard 1" buckles and webbing that Kifaru and other manufacturers use on there packs? I'm Looking to cut weight on my pack builds, but if there is an issue with holding strength/slippage...

    Thread for gear building

I have used the Gutermann MARA 50 and 70 threads from ripstop by the roll on everything from silnylon to 500d cordura with good results. I'm not sure what others are using.

    VX21 X-Pac Fabric

Hey guys, Quick question for all of the DIY experts. I'm planning a pack build and would like to use VX21 (210D) X-Pac for the back panel (closets to the frame) & a sewn in meat shelf for the pack. The thought being to save some weight over standard 500D as well as provide a level of...

    What do you keep accessible?

I run muiltiple Kifaru setups & I keep it the same across all of my platforms regardless of number of days in the field. (22 Mag, Reckoning, DIY cargo panel). Here is a list of items I can always get to, without getting into the main bag. These are either located in the big side pockets, belt...

    Dual Fuel Stoves or canister(butane)

I actually have both. Initially, I bought a dual fuel stove to cover myself in pretty much any situation. High elevation, low elevation, extremely cold, dual fuel, backpacking over seas, etc. That being said, I picked up a Soto Wind Master (butane) last year and haven't used my dual fuel...

    Replacement webbing/straps

I've used this a lot for DIY straps, etc. From what I can tell, it's pretty much identical to what Kifaru uses. Military Flat Nylon Webbing - 1 Inch - Strapworks.com Also, Rockywoods.com has a good selection of buckles/hardware.

    Kifaru Guide Lid Attachment

Are they open ended female buckles that can be removed? I'm pretty sure that's how mine is. I'm not sure how old your lid is, but the new ones should come with both the k-clip and female buckle attachment options if I'm remembering correctly.

    22 mag vs tarryall

I would agree with mrbill. I tried to take the belt off of my 22 mag (riding on a 22" UL frame) & travel with it and it sucked. Just to big & bulky for a carry-on. I can't imagine what a pain it would've been if I would've left the belt on the frame. Also, without the belt, it was somewhat...

    Kifaru pack setup?

That thing looks Awesome! That would be a great option, but if he is not a DIY guy, the cost of that setup may be prohibitive depending on his budget.

    Kifaru pack setup?

I would say either find a deal on a used bag in the classifieds, or just save your money and buy a mid sized bag from kifaru. Depending on the usage, the markhor would be a legit option. With a cargo panel, by the time you add the dry bag, lid, and a couple of belt pouches, you're getting close...
