Anymore these kinds of projects always have an updated website with maps etc. Good hunting!
I've hunted the Snowcrests. Huge country, remote, with grizzlies and wolves and a moderate amount of pressure. I didn't see many huge elk racks around, didn't see a lot of elk either but they were around. I think you've got your work cut out for you, but go for it.
You've gotten a lot of hard comments here, and there's value in them. Here's some advice. Worth what you pay for it, which is nothing.
1. Pick a state. I would not suggest MT for a first timer, because you add grizz and wolves to the mix, and you don't need that additional variable. Plus the...
Count me as one who doesn't care for the ergs on the Tikka. It just doesn't fit me. I'm not a fan of box magazines, some are. It does have a silky smooth action, is accurate and well made. So are lots of rifles.
I would tell you, in this day and age, my opinion is that the rifle has to fit and...
I have a bunch of shotguns but the only one that gets any real time in the field is my Browning A-5 Sweet Sixteen which was somebody else's before it became mine. You might expand your thinking and searching to include older guns, just a thought. If you want to have a brand new shotgun, I...
I have thousands of dollars worth of optics which I bought for hundreds of dollars by buying demos. The first time I use stuff, it will be "used" anyway, so what's the difference?
Have them shortened. I am rather short legged myself and I get my hunting pants shortened so they don't drag in the mud etc. Cabelas used to do it for free, on the spot while you wait, maybe they still do.
I just went through the same exercise. I went with Cloudburst for the fit and the pit zips, and the hood roll up feature. Thunderhead has a hood that just flaps around and I do not like that.
The only reason I would want Thunderhead is if I was needing silence. Its very soft and quiet. For the...
This isn't hard. Focus on rifle much more so than calibers. Anything from .243 to .308. How about a .257 Bob? .260 rem?
The rifle is much more important than the caliber.
I just found this thread, sorry I'm late to the party. I'm from SD. I hunt birds and deer mostly. I try to get in a big game hunt out west every year. This years trip is to Montana, leaving in ten days and looking forward to it.
I shoot 16ga and .270 mostly, although I do like other calibers...
4350 was a good powder, probably still is. I just feel like a guy could buy ammo off the shelf and be as good as that.
There's just so many better powders out there right now. I've gone to Alliant for almost all my reloading any more.
I agree with you that its fixable. Feels like a scope issue to me. Assume you checked that?
I don't know much about Ruger Americans, are they supposed to be free floated? If so then you're on the right track. No reason to assume that they're inherently inaccurate, the reports are too good to...
My best advice is to JUST GO. Seriously, just get out there and do it.
You're not going to have a perfect hunt, don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good.
If you're from the south, maybe pick Colorado. No sense in driving past elk on your way to Idaho or Montana. And no sense in adding...
I just moved to RL 26 for my .270 and am very impressed. Velocity gains and they tout temperature insensitivity as well. I haven't been able to test them on that claim yet but I went from 2920 with 150 NP's to 3040. I don't know what bullets you're using but since its the same case, You might...
