I used 140g Nosler Partition from my 6.5 Creedmoor to take a cow elk last season and would have no reservations of using that same load on bulls out to 500.

Nephew's elk, agree with the guides. Was there something about this particular bull that made the Uncle unwilling to let the nephew notch his tag?

Edit: upon closer reading, I gather it was the size of the bull that prompted his view?
Your 270 WSM will serve you well as an elk rifle along with any optics upgrade you have in mind. I've used that caliber and never found it lacking sufficient killing power. Probably a more important question is what bullets you have a mind to use?

Can you please educate me on how these calculations are made? I shoot several different rifles and loads; obviously it's dependent on muzzle velocity, but could use help understanding how the range/energy figures are calculated. Thanks in advance.

Yeah, the Oregon regs are pretty clear in this regard. If you don't have permission prior to applying, don't assume that you'll get it after the fact.

You might also touch base with the Elk Nut forums, the mod (Paul) is from Idaho and can give some insight, in addition to the Roksliders of course! Good luck.
