First time I’ve been able to punch an elk tag on an out of state hunt. General tag, public land, and got really lucky to have this guy walk out in front of me at 150 yds at first light on day 3. Took 3 double lung shots before he finally dropped.
I have been using the GMX out of my .270 for a few years now and have no complaints. I haven't had the chance to test it on a bull yet, but I have killed cows anywhere from 50 to 350 yds with a single shot. My cow this year went down within 10 yards and the exit wound was the size of a quarter...
After moving from NV to MT this year, I wasn't sure if I was going to be able to hunt. let alone fill a tag learning a new set of regulations and landscapes. I was pretty stoked to not only be able to buy a NR tag over the counter, but fill it. Additionally, I was able to do it with my 12 yr old...
That will be a fun tag! Hunting elk during the rut with a rifle! There's a decent chance you'll have to drag a cow out of a hell hole somewhere if you want to fill the tag, but shouldn't be too much trouble finding them.
That can be a pretty tough tag to hunt from a side by side, but doable. About your only options in the Rubies/East Humboldts are Secret Pass, Harrison Pass, Horse Canyon, or the few access points on the Ruby Valley side. 109 is pretty road accessible, but lower deer density.
With the late tag, the pressure won't be too bad. They don't give out too many of those and as you mentioned, the area is huge. The early tag can be a bit more crowded. The Jarbidge area has some really nice deer in it, but fewer and further between. Far more elk in there than deer. The Snake...
I ran into this exact problem last year in Jarbidge. I just went to the next trailhead where the road conditions were a lot harder to get a trailer down, but not a big deal to get my truck to. I had that place to myself for the the two days I was there and got the bull in my avatar picture on...
My very first time big game hunting my buddy and I doubled up on cows. We were about 3 miles back, and had both run out of water. I loved/hated every agonizing minute of packing that first quarter out. Went back to town and got help for the rest.
The only snow is up high. Hard to say exactly, but my guestimate from looking at the Ruby's is no snow until 8,000'+. The roads down low have actually manged to dry out in the last couple weeks.
My first three cow elk were all sitting with a rest - shooting sticks, rock, and backpack. Once I realized my pack was about the same height as my shooting sticks and more stable I stopped carrying them. My bull this year, however, the brush was too tall to sit and have a clear shot, so it was a...
The herd where I work has been right on schedule this year, though that is private property which obviously makes a difference. When I was up in 072 for my muzzy hunt I only heard a couple bugles right at first light. I never heard the bull I eventually got make a peep, and he wasn't near any...
"Adult Onset Hunter" here. This upcoming season will by my 5th try at it.
So far 3 for 4 on draw (that's all we have in NV) cow tags. Average 5-6 days per hunt
0 for 1 on a 0 point draw tag in CO.
Hoping to be 1 for 1 on NV bull tags by the end of this season!
Nice looking bull! Looks that bullet really got hammered/did some hammering at that range in the elk. Really good expansion in the deer, too. Thanks for the reply.
Hey all,
I got my first muzzle loader bull elk tag this year. I like using copper bullets for my big game, and have heard good things about the Barnes Spitfire T-EZ in 290 grains. Just wondering if anyone has any first hand experience with these. How did they perform? Did they mushroom as...
