    Your legs are going to freeze. Here's what I'd wear based on my gear. Top: Chama Klamath C4E Elevation Puffy 700 fill (your Sanctuary will work great here) Bottom: Allegheny base Obsidian pants MT050 Whitetail Extreme pants. I'd recommend some sort of insulating layer on top of your pants.

    I have one, and it's a laser. It's also heavy. I've carried it for stationary whitetail hunting quite a bit, but it wouldn't be an ideal rifle to pack around.

    I have 2 Hiperfires, 3 Timneys, bought and sold a Larue MBT, and have 5 different types of Geisseles. For a 2-stage in your budget, I'd recommend a Geissele G2S or Larue MBT. For a single stage, I like the Timney.

    It looks like they've taken down the amounts, but it depended on the company's sales numbers. The big hitters in the industry were saddled with some ridiculous amount. I'm wanting to say it was in the six figures although it's been a while since I've seen the numbers.

    how short of a barrel is too short .308 mountain rifle

    I'm getting 2500 fps with a 165 AB out of my 16" .308. It's in an AR platform, but I have no complaints. It shoots very well.
