I know the topic of DIY hunting Hawaii is discussed somewhat commonly so I thought I’d share my experience. Two months ago I got camping permits for the Kalalau valley. My wife and I went last week and camped 1 night. The place is infested w goats. I’d say we saw close to 70. The closer we got...
Love the balance of the Zeiss Victory SF 10x42 but the lack of edge to edge clarity like you get w Swaro really really started to bug me. Im going NL Pure
I've tried thousands of dollars of boots and shoes as a hunter and ultra runner. I've landed in the lighter category of footwear when I hunt. La Sportiva Ultra Raptor Mid GTX has been the boot that gained my confidence after much trial and error. The sole has enough torsional stiffness to bite...
Thank you for your comments and your statistics. I felt like the post was fair and even handed and included the pros and cons of the trip. I agree with you when you observe that it was strange that the owner didn't interact with you and that some of the employees didn't share at least a little...
So funny and so true!
'm sitting here complaining about all this technology but I was pretty stoked to take a super cub into the backcountry of Alaska.

All this new technology is kind of bumming me out.
Won't be long before guys will be hitting the trail with a Tesla pack buddy or a robotic goat.
I've got some very...
When I visit people’s trophy rooms sometimes the souvenirs from hunts to far flung locations are as interesting as the animals on the wall. Just thought I’d post a thread to see what cool souvenirs people have picked up during their travels.
I picked up this Frank Entsminger original bronze on...
Happy w my BFG KO2s. One of the big reasons I bought them is they are 10 ply tires. i've never had a gashed sidewall or rip due to rocks. They ride reasonably well compared to highway tires.
Look at Western Mountaineering Kodiak. It is rate to zero and the Badger is rated to 15. If you need 15 degrees you might as well have zero. The difference is 6 oz of weight.
Oregon1234, I'm not a big shed hunter, but the little I've done and the way I see other do it, is a lot like regular hunting. It starts with scouting. Successful shed hunters seem to watch the herds and where they are wintering and then start hiking those areas once it is ethical to do so. Just...
I've had a similar problem and learned to use the clip on the handle to secure the knife to the holster when I'm wearing it on my belt. It is easy for the snap to come undone when I'm wearing a backpack waist belt and I've had some close calls.
WM Kodiak with 7" of loft is so cozy it isn't even funny. As I say that, I have not taken it down to 0 degrees. For me I like a 10 to 20 degree buffer on my bag rating vs expected temperature
Huckleberry Finn, By Mark Twain -The audio recording of this book on Audible by Elijah Wood will blow your mind. Way easier to consume in an audio recording than in print. "All modern American literature comes from one book by Mark Twain called Huckleberry Finn. . . . All American writing comes...
Mine are a little different, I've almost been killed twice by falling objects. Once was on a scout hike down the ZIon narrows when a boulder dislodged from the rim and narrowly missed the group by a few feet. The other was while hunting in WY during a big wind storm. The wind broke a huge rotten...
I've learned that if my friends and I have the same tags we will end up in the field together most of the time, if those tags require travel the likelyhood is even greater. I believe the demand on people's time is so high that it is difficult for them to get in the field unless it is their own...
Customweld, thanks for your thoughts. If I'm thinking right, unit 32 and 32A split off from each other in 2018, or maybe 2017? I know they were still together back in 2016. What is interesting is that IDFG website hasn't published bear harvest stats since 2016. Unit 32 continues to get a lot of...
