some good skiff rentals there, don't know about kayaks. last time we had the tag we flew in our raft/frame/motor. worked great. talked to a group that used pack rafts, that worked too.
we've rented vehicles and boats from Hollis adventure rentals a bunch, always good experiences, they do get booked out pretty far though. i'm sure you've checked with powoutfitter.com? are you planning on hunting the south east side? north east side has plenty of access but yea boats can really...
It’s true, our original transporter went under. We used Nordic (amphib 185) and Scott Newman (beaver) both excellent pilots and aircraft out of petersburg. Very good pricing to where we flew, 1020$ one way for beaver, 600$ for 185
Hey! Awesome bears and pics! Congrats! This is “wife” went off about caribou hunt in one of the caribou posts but happy to fill in any questions. I remember you guys were still in the process of picking a transporter. We just took our basic camp gear plus bear fence. I bought Justin some fancy...
Raft is a Pristine Ventures (Larry Bartlett) pioneer x-stream. Frame is custom by a guy who lives near us, Montana Raft Frames (totally modular, packs great on mules too). Topped it with a suzuki 2.5hp. Pretty happy with the setup, we were able to cover a 14 mile spread and easy to deal with in...
Kuiu was amazing. Late spring/bad winter meant bears were just popping on the tidal flats. Got to look at alot of bears, many were badly rubbed. We both tagged 19"+. Raft/frame/motor were a pain to fly up there but were ideal for cruising bays. Southeast AK never dissapoints.
Sure, I stripped and split them in AK, covered tips with garden hose, wrapped in bubble wrap and took as baggage home. My taxidermist sent them to an outfit in North Dakota I think? There was a base price of 100$ and then it was like .90 cents and inch? And it was a 400” bull so somewhere around...
Our experience has been that caribou shed end of August, early Sept. We’ve stripped ours taken during this time because it just wasn’t attached well anymore. We got fake velvet applied on one and it looks sweet but expensive. Fairbanks fur tannery does a good job of freeze drying and shipping
They do have freakishly large skulls. Just looked back at all our hides and they sure look good. Haven’t heard about the paw thing going to have to keep an eye out. Ours bears here in MT certainly get can badly rubbed in the late spring but it seems like it’s usually their butts and foreheads...
Bummer don’t give up, we’ve had our kid up to POW twice when he was 2 and 3, stayed in a nice cabin in Thorne bay and had a blast with him on sandy beach and out on the boat and on the ferry and float plane.
Our mainland and pow spring bears have been great, we’ve always hunted before June 1. Bears were clearly using tide flats exclusively. Had some fall pow bear from a friend and yea, that was nasty.
