    Easy to rebarrel factory rifle

Short of something off the path, such as Blaser, Steyr, Feinwerkba, SeeHuber, Hammerli, or Grunig/Elmiger stuff, hanging a new stick on a receiver (especially anything made here in the US) is pretty straightforward. "Gunsmith" is a lot like "lawyer." The title might imply something, but some...

8-40 screws. Any gunsmiths in the house?

Tapping a blind hole with an 8-40 tap sucks. It's why I gave up on it two decades ago and interpolate and thread mill the buggers in a CNC mill. As for why he did this? It would seem he has his reasons. Whether it's viable is up for debate, as I've never been compelled to do it that way...

Thin Fluted Barrels vs Carbon Barrels on factory rifles?

Look at it like this: If I take a barrel made of steel it's going to weigh "X" for any given contour. If I then take the same barrel and turn it down to a pencil and wrap the outside of it with graphite strands or cloth, it will probably not weigh quite as much as when I started. Why? Carbon...

Bedding question for the resident gunsmith's--barrel channel

When I worked for Anschutz in the 90s, I'd cast a support block 1-1/2 inches beyond the face of the receiver when fitting up a 660mm barrel as it seemed to help with supporting the longer tubes. (Anschutz 54 receivers aren't all that big) I've never seen any benefit on centerfire guns, though.

Here at the shop: Wash your stuff with low-odor mineral spirits. Finish with hot water and Dawn soap.

Reset button on an 03 Springfield bolt.

The staff I have are all rock stars in my eyes, as they've gotten quite good at what they do here. It's nice because it allows me to take on jobs like this. Something I've always had a soft spot for because repairs like this are typically avoided like the bubonic plague by most shops...

Reset button on an 03 Springfield bolt.

The basic story is the handle was repositioned in a previous life, and it didn't go well for someone. I was asked to try and "unmurder" it. Step One: Removing the cancer caused by a wire feed welder: Next, a quick zap to set the position and check alignment: With the handle "stuck"...

    LRI?

I bought my 2500 series pickup in 2020. It cost me $60.00 to fill it up that summer. Now, it's over $130 and I've seen it as high as $160.00. A 1/2" carbide endmill used to cost me around $35.00. Today that same tool is north of $60 bucks. Rising tides float all the boats gents. As for...

    Barrel threading….again.

Lol. I'm making a revised version of the M249 bolt carrier. There are 75 different tool path operations for one part that I translate to 4 different vises. A regeneration after an edit takes a few minutes, so I stick my nose in the forum while I wait. :) These delete the relief cuts for...

We can. It'd be around $200-ish.

    Barrel threading….again.

Worms in a can.....you just opened it. Lol. First, you are not making something stronger or stiffer anytime you remove material from it. I look at it like this: Example #1: If I take a #1 contour "spaghetti barrel" and wave a magic wand over it to grow a series of rib features that are...

300 Win Mag recommendations… Thank you!!!

One from a couple of years ago. P64 M70 fitted to a McMillan M40A1 stock. I used this as the test mule for (at the time) our new M70DBM setup. The idea is a magazine that looks like a hinged floor plate. -I whacked the bottom off an AI magazine, machined a plate to look like the lid, and...

    Barrel threading….again.

If you are "white sheeting" the build, ordering the barrel however you want is always the best policy. We hang north of a hundred sticks a month. I'd go on a limb and say 95% of them things have threads on the muzzle. Part two is the walk-in/mail-in threading service we have. That's easily...

    Caliber for Daughter??

I have a client with twin brothers around ten years old. I built them a pair of Remingtons chambered in 6 International. (Nothing more than a 22-250 necked up to 6mm) Dad's free time is now highly regulated as the two little chits keep him chained to the basement ammunition factory. He's...

NEW American Rifle Company Coup De Grace Action $899

I guess I'm missing the reliability and safety issue. I have not experienced that. I've had a Jewel trigger gum up on me, but I figured out how to solve that little annoyance. (lighter fluid is NOT the fix it is made out to be) I've never had a slam fire in the field or at the range.
