    Idaho Spring Bear

Did you have a cold snap where you were? The area I was in had seen 70 degree temps for a couple of weeks. A day before I got there, it dipped down to highs in the mid 40s and got windy, and remained that way through our trip. I’m guessing that slowed everything down and made the bears much less...

It’s been my experience that OnX recent imagery is about 10-14 days behind. It helps to look at previous years’ data on there as well. You’ll see when every brown spot changes to bright green in one click. Then you can compare that to your current imagery and make an educated guess about when...

    Idaho Spring Bear

I’ve now been out multiple times in both North and Central ID this year, and it’s my first year using permethrin. It is a game changer. I have not found a single tick crawling on me, vs dozens in years past. +1 for permethrin.

Same. Central ID this Thursday thru Sunday. OnX Recent Imagery tells me that at least the area I’ll be hunting will be starting to get green. Hopefully the weather will give at least a few good breaks.

Just starting to green up in my neck of the woods.

    Idaho Spring Bear

My .44 lives in a holster attached to my bino harness. Super comfortable and easy to hike with. I just leave it on year-round and don’t think much of it. Walking up on a “dead” bear in a thick nasty creek bottom, it’s probably easier for me to just have the handgun ready than the rifle. That’s...

I don’t think lion season will be open during your hunt. Definitely have a wolf tag, though. About the lion thing: if you’re somewhere where the season is indeed open, I would always have a lion tag in your pocket. You just never know when you’re going to stumble across one. I drew the deer/elk...

    Idaho Spring Bear

I live in unit 2. We've been getting a ton of late snow. For reference, right now, in my area, anywhere above 3,000ft is inaccessible to motorized travel unless you've got a sled or tracks. If I had to guess, I'd say that it will end up being a normal April/May for access and snow. Your...

WA also has a more robust state constitutional protection for the right to bear arms than the US constitution, and that hasn’t stopped the commies from passing insane illegal gun control last year and again this year. It’s a nice gesture but I don’t have much faith in those sort of...

Do you think maybe if I’m nice enough to the buzzworms, I can bring a few home as pets?

    NM Oryx Hunt

Awesome write up. This is a hunt that I’ve always wanted to do, and your story confirms that for me. Well done.

Good to know, because I plan on staying exclusively on ridge tops. I always bring trekking poles into snake country and they’ve been very helpful in the past when I’ve come across snakes. I hope the only reason I’d have to get down into the low bottoms is to look for a dead bear.

2018 Idaho Unit 11-13-18 RMBS Hunt Phase One Continued

Thanks for the insight. At this point, I expect ticks to be everywhere in the spring. I live and hunt in North Idaho and they’re thick up here. I’ve hunted rattlesnake country before. Not pleasant but a worthwhile evil to access the country. If I could go later in the spring, I’d be headed to...

That’s what I figured. That the accessible parts of the WMA is basically all of Lewiston’s playground.

Nice, I appreciate the response. I’m going try to start high and get into the river breaks as far from main roads as I can get. The steep nasty stuff. Looks like hell to navigate but also looks super glassable and like prime spring habitat.

2018 Idaho Unit 11-13-18 RMBS Hunt Phase One Continued

@RimRunner @Jdcollins86 Did either of you end up hunting spring bears on the WMA? Depending on how the rest of this winter shakes out snow-wise, I'm headed down there to hunt bears in late April/early May, and I have some questions about access. Feel free to PM me if you prefer. Any insight...

Awesome, congrats! I’m going to try to get out in unit 2 close to home a few more times this spring. Maybe I’ll get lucky.

    Idaho Spring Bear

Saw a lot of beautiful country, elk, mule deer, and sheep, but no bears. Hunted and glassed hard. I think that the elevations I was hunting (4k-7k) were just not quite green enough yet. The grass and flowers were really only popping down around 3k. I got the feeling the bears were just not...
