“Overbore” has no functional meaning. The 6mm PRC is great, but is only about 150’ish FPS faster than a 6cm. Which, if you are trying to make up MV from a short barrel is a good thing. However, it won’t achieve the speed that a 6UM does.”
@Formidilosus
I’m curious why you would state that as an...
@Ryan Avery curious why the 6/6.5 PRC wildcat doesn’t get mentioned. It seems like the easy button option to reclaim lost speed from cutting a 6 creed barrel to suppressor ready length with good parent brass availability, no fire forming and keeping overbore lower than a 6 UM or 6/7 PRC.
Curious where folks are getting tikkas .223 and 22-250’s rechambered at a reasonable cost, everywhere I’ve called it’s the same price as getting a new barrel chambered and installed.
Another point to consider: I compared a nightforce atacr 4-16x42 side by side with trijicon tenmile 3x18x44 and they are much closer than the price would indicate. Mine had the moa-xt reticle and my biggest complaints for nightforce were that the center dot was very hard to see for me on less...
@wind gypsy I looked up the DTAC and it’s OAL is 1.344. Even if we say to get an additional 5 grains we have to bump it to 1.38, Bergers twist calculator says the bullet is fully stable in a 1:7.5 twist barrel at 2000 ft elevation.
I actually took Litz’ calculation to extrapolate a scaled up 95 gr .224 bullet to a 6mm.
- 6mm/5.56mm = 1.079136690647482
-cubed that equals = 1.256565343671
- then multiply 95 grains by that value to arrive at 6mm scaled equivalent that weighs: 119.37 grains
If we scale that again up to 6.5mm...
Thanks for sharing this. If I’m reading the example right tho, it shows the scaled up and down bullets at equivalent weights for respective caliber. Given that at each caliber example listed there’s already a heavier bullet than used in the example (.224- 90 gr, 6.5-142 gr, 7mm-175 gr, .308- 220...
Ruger American Gen II is my vote. 20” fluted, cerakoted and threaded barrel included in popular calibers not commonly as factory options: 6 creed, 22 ARC, 6arc, 6.5 Grendel etc, known for shooting really well, handicapped by a God awful stock design.
Sharing an update with the group. I contacted Hornady asking if they would consider bringing a heavier 6mm bullet to market and got the following reply. Maybe we need to have a few (hundred) more folks submit requests…
Sorry to hear about the issues @Rooseveltwrecker. Definitely sucks to feel like a beta tester. On the bright side, it seems like you now have an action that’s within roughly an ounce or so of a similarly spec’d defiance medium action. From what I understand you’re fairly limited on those with...
Certainly an interesting data point for sure. Seems like you have a barrel outperforming everyone else that posted in that thread with the same or longer barrels. Tough to say if they are running anywhere near max charge tho, may be backed off a bit. I think that’s kind of the point tho, in...
The other consideration is that you can always run a 6 magnum with a milder powder charge to get reduced recoil and then step on it when you want to, a bit more flexibility than running the creed near max to hit top end velocity goals. Whispers to @B_Reynolds_AK “come on, build a 6 mag… all the...
I’m not sure that’s accurate is it? From the research I did it seems most report 2900 is about the max to expect with a 20” barrel without going over pressure. This thread has some good real world input from folks running 6 creed with short barrels. That was what steered me towards a 6 PRC build...
I appreciate the good discussion in this thread. I just placed an order for a 6 PRC thru Unknown Munitions and am going to start gathering reloading components. I have previously been reloading for a 7 mm REM mag, and have a number of powder and primer options there, but will need 6.5 PRC brass...
