You need to see this video on the 150 mile migration Wyoming's Red Desert deer undertake every year. Fascinating and to hear those deer vocalizations was great, too. Definitely worth the watch.

great video thanks for posting. My question about the video is when do they actually start there migration for the wintering grounds? So if I was scouting this summer on a mule deer/ backcountry backpack and found so nice deer can I expect to see them in the same area or are they going to be long gone when it comes to oct rifle season?

retterath,
that question is answered differently for every mule deer herd. Some of Wyoming's Gray's River deer start migrating late October snow or no snow, same on the Utah's Paunsaguant and some of the south-central Idaho deer.

With enough snow, all deer will migrate no matter the season. I've hunted Idaho bucks in late October that left due to snow when on other years, they are there until late December. Check with the locals and the biologist for specific info on your herd.

So they are basically moving to lower elevation trying to get out of the deep snow and find a good food source.
