I first started formulating a plan last year while glassing one morning in July and glassed up 3 bears in 30 minutes. Figured I'd put in for the archery bear tag in that part of AZ this year. Fast forward to this year, and after drawing the tag, doing some scouting and planning, and recruiting some friends to help, I found myself stalking in on a decent black bear in mid-July here in AZ.

I was able to move in with in 50 yards while he was feeding and put an arrow in him. He ran off about 60 yards and crashed in sight. I was very happy, but then the work began. Luckily, the little cloud cover we had held until we got him skinned and quartered, and as we were donning our packs for the hike out, the sun started beating down on us. The bear was spotted at 5:15am, I shot him at 7am, and we had him back to the truck and on ice a little after noon.

I was very appreciative of the help I had to get him broken down and back to the truck.

Nice bear. Based on his scars he looks like he wasn't afraid to mix it up.

Congrats on a job well done. Curiousity wise, did you measure the skull?

AZinAK
Thanks!

No, I never did measure the skull before dropping it off at the taxidermist. I should get the skull back in a few weeks.
