arkansas pack horse trip for deer

my buddy wants to start packing out west so we took a deer hunting trip on the buffalo river in december for him to practice packing and tie a hitch on a pack.

he gathered up all the gear and bought some stock and we used his stock to go in.

breakfast was tenderloins the first day.

we had both shot a buck so this was a meat trip

so he says how we going to do this? we? says i. you are going to tie a diamond on it.

we had to take the first deer to the truck right away because the flies were out and the river was on the rise. by the time we had put the meat on ice and headed back to camp the horses were almost swimming at the river crossings.

if i dont get better he might be on his own for elk season.

we did not see another hunter all week, 8 chest deep water crossings will cut the competetion back.

my son killed an elk on the buffalo, I also killed my first deer on the Buffalo River in 1990.

Very cool. The nice thing about applying Western hunting style to larger public lands back East is the total lack of pressure.
