Interesting. Never heard the term heterodyning before. I used wave principles and harmonics to place my string silencers. The 2nd harmonic has antinodes at 1/4 and 1/4, which is why I put my silencers at 1/4 from top and 1/4 from bottom rather than 1/3. However, in reality you see a combination of harmonics and frequencies. I might try this out and compare the total sound output... string silencers at 1/4 - 1/4 vs 1/4 - 1/3.

Another interesting experiment would be to record the sound of the shot each time and analyze the frequency spectrum in a software like Adobe Audition. I'm sure you'd have a different distribution of frequencies in each case.
