Best Caliber For Calling Wolves?

I'm wanting to re barrel my 22-250 to something better suited to a dedicated wolf rifle and can't settle on a caliber. I've been looking at everything from a 243 up to a 308. What's everybody else using as a dedicated wolf calling caliber?

The 22-250 has killed wolves for me but just doesn't have the killing power I'm looking for from a wolf specific rifle. Adult wolves here in Alberta average between 120-170 lbs. My current barrel is a 1-14 twist and will only stabilize up to a 55 gr

I think I'd go 6.5 Creedmoor for sure. Awesome ballistics, increasing popularity and availability, and high b.c./s.d. bullets. An 8 or 9 twist 22-250 could do the job too, unless you are set on a bigger caliber.

Why not go 250 savage ? You can neck up 22-250 brass and it's a great round. There's also a ai version that would work well. .257" bullets at modest velocity should work well on large predators and on antelope as well. Load data is available in most manuals. If you want to go another route any of the .308 family or even the 6.5 creedmoor would be awesome I'd think. We don't have any wolves here (yet) but I kill a lot of coyotes with my 7mm-08ai I even use my .300 win mag a bunch on them for super long range (for me 500-600) stuff.

If I were rebarreling, I'd go with a .260 Remington over a 6.5 CM, but I think either would be great. A fast twist .243 would work, too.

Get a 1:8 twist barrel for your rifle, and stay .22-250.
75Amaxs should make almost 3300 from a straight .250...

Blown the shoulder out, and you'll get near 3400 from a .22-250AI. That is a whole 'nutha animal from a slow twist .250 throwing light bullets...

A .22-243Win would be a step up from there. Simple neck down plentiful .243Win brass, and shoot.

A .22-243AI offers another step up in capacity. Mine throws a 75Amax @ 3600, easy peasy. If you run the ballistics on that combo, your eyebrows will lift! You pay the piper in barrel life, but who cares? (For the performance, I sure don't)

Stepping up to a larger bore, a .243AI throwing 105Amaxs @ ~3250 would be evil. But you're gonna have quite a bit more blast & recoil, and not as near as flat trajectory as the necked down version throwing a 75 ~400fps faster...

Unless you go with a monster of a 6.5mm, none offer the flat trajectory that I like for predator whacking. It allows for more of a 'fudge factor' for range estimation on the fly. And the muzzle blast just becomes too much, if you wanna watch your critter crumble in the scope and get on the next one, quickly...

Good luck & have fun!

How about 22 creedmoor.

It would fill the small performance niche between the .22-250AI and .22-243Win, either of which has Lapua brass available to load for.
Thats a deal breaker, for me...

I shoot wolves with whatever I can gram 1st,, my wife has killed 4 in our yard with a 22mag. I tend to favor 30cal as I will shoot at a wolf much farther than she will. Shot from the house with 308 KM w/150gr NP.

A .243 pill seem's about perfect. If you reload a .260 would be awesome. I am not much into all the specialty cartridges myself.
