M.U.L.E.Y. KIDS' DAY THIS SATURDAY IN CALHAN


CALHAN, Colo. - The Pikes Peak Chapter of the Mule Deer Foundation (MDF), along with support from Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) and several other organizations, is hosting a M.U.L.E.Y. Kids' Day on May 2, at the Rocky Mountain Roosters near Calhan, 19184 County Rd. 78.

M.U.L.E.Y. Kids are Mindful, Understanding, Legal and Ethical Youth and the M.U.L.E.Y. Kids' Day is an introduction to shooting sports and wildlife conservation for children seven to 17 years old.

"Each year this event gets bigger and better," said Weldon Flaharty, MDF Pikes Peak Chapter Chairman. "Last year we had 247 kids and the year before that we had 174. I can't wait to see what kind of turnout we get this year."

Activities include: BB gun shooting, .22 rifle shooting, shotgun shooting, black powder shooting and archery.In addition, CPW will provide a laser shooting range with a focus on hunting ethics. Other activities include: CPW deer biology/wildlife conservation classes, CPW radio telemetry classes, CPW Operation Game Thief trailer, llama packing demonstrations, fly casting, fly tying and cowboy action shooting demonstrations.

"We want these kids to have a good time but we also want to make sure they understand how hunting plays an important role in managing healthy wildlife populations," said District Wildlife Manager Philip Gurule.

The event runs from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Cost is $10 per child, if pre-registered, or $20 per child at the door. Registration includes Mule Deer Foundation hat, Mule Deer Foundation Youth Membership, lunch, beverages, equipment and ammunition. Cost for adults is $5 a person to cover lunch and beverages. A parent, guardian or responsible adult must be present for the entire day.

The MDF is a non-profit wildlife conservation organization with a mission to safely introduce youth to shooting sports, ensuring the sport's continued growth and educating youth on the importance of wildlife conservation. Other organizations involved in the event are Pheasants Forever (Quail Forever), Colorado Springs Muzzle Loaders, Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, Colorado Springs Junior Olympic Archery Development, National Wild Turkey Federation, Colorado Shaketails Cowboy Action Shooters, Ducks Unlimited, Trout Unlimited, 4-H Shooting Sports,Colorado Pack Llamas, Elk Ridge Taxidermy and Eddy Eagle from the El Paso County Sheriff's Office.
