ADFG has reduced the harvest quota to 30 bulls which is significantly down from the usual 70-80 bulls. The herd is difficult to count as they are non-migratory and do not congregate in large groups. Much of the herd hangs out in the Donnelly Flats area and provides great photo ops for tourists.

The herd extends over into the Robertson River and TMA country and probably wanders into 20A and 13 as well. Most of the hunt is within DCUA. Beautiful country!

This hunt is/was a great opportunity for those that wanted a wilderness backpack hunt as most of the season was non-motorized except for the last two days. There was/is opportunity for very nice bulls. Some non-motorized hunters rode bikes from the west side DCUA.

If any members are hunting sheep in DCUA, will you give us a post hunt synopsis of what you saw for caribou.

McComb herd is small but an indication of what the last two winters did in this area.

Delta Junction area got crushed with a bad and long winter. Macomb herd will probably take a couple years to recover. They also cut back on the Nelchina harvest for this year. Guessing Fortymile will be conservative as well with the winter and the high cow harvest rate on the winter hunts.

Do we really need to bring up these smaller herds on a forum? Especially when the numbers are down?

No we should not bring them up. Or the idea of walking in and killing one a day before it opens for motorized and coming back in and hauling it out with the wheeler. We should NOT give people that idea either!

Eh 90% of the hunters up here are too lazy anyways. I have been in the mountains and saw what happens on the motor days. Few people leave well before midnight.
