South Dakota GFP this week proposed re-opening the Black Hills mountain goat hunting season this year. They'll vote in less than a month to finalize the motion, but this would be the first hunt in the region in nearly 10 years (last hunt was in 2006). In coordination with SD GFP, the Rocky Mountain Goat Alliance conducted a survey in the area last spring with this very outcome in mind. I thought I'd share here since I know several members helped with the survey last April. We'll be at it again this spring too.
Just goes to show that some activism and involvement can bring about real-world results. If passed, this will be the second new goat-hunting opportunity resulting directly, at least in part, from an RMGA survey. This fall two hunters successfully harvested mature billies in Montana's HD-361 , which was opened after a 2013 summer count conducted in cooperation with MT FWP. To my mind, that's a pretty strong record for such a young organization.
